I think you just answered my question below.

"Back to the subject at hand. Larry, if you are shooting HDV what bitrate are you transcoding that into? You shouldn't need to go more than about 150Mb/sec on a good intraframe codec such as Cineform. If you are using a bitrate in that range then RAID for your media drives would certainly not be needed."

I will/should not encode to anything faster than 150mbps. If one day I do, then, I can add the appropriate drives, internal or external.

So to recap

What about the following config, as far as drives

Boot/OS/Application hosting drive SSD 256GB or bigger
Media drive 2-4TB, the best quality I can afford
Render drive The biggest 10,000 rpm disk I can afford?
