File transfer and compression

Hello everyone! I am curious as to how file transfer and compression work. I understand this is done in a format called MPEG-2 as well as various others however I feel that the information I am reading is a bit short and conveying the wrong information as my source is Wikipedia. What I am asking is a good website that gives a decent run down of this process so that I can produce a small article as a learning device to the process. I am interested in getting a better understanding of the terms "lossy" and "lossless" and how one may be advantageous depending on the situation as well as every other aspect of this process. Perhaps how I am describing this is not coherent at all, as I said I feel I am not understanding this fully.

Any suggestions?

Thank you!!
-Terry.
