Metal microphone shield (w/FU-1000)

With the wealth of knowledge and experience in the community, can anyone share the purpose of, or the necessity for, the "metal shield" that Canon included in the box of the FU-1000 Monochrome CRT Viewfinder?

Re: Metal microphone shield (w/FU-1000)

As I recall, it was to prevent the magnetic field of the CRT from inducing noise in the microphone signal on the XL1s.
