Re: Windows 10 free?

I have read that extremely long installation times can be caused by a in the BIOS activated 1.44 mb floppy disc, when this was set to "none" the installation time returned to normal, it also seems that pc's with special chipsets where affected by it (p35 and 45 from intel and 600/700 series from amd.)

Despicable stuff indeed!

Is it not possible to uninstall IE and use Firefox or Chromium instead so the "security" patch is not needed? Just curious.

Dave

I'm honestly not sure what the ramifications of uninstalling IE are. I've preferred to take what I consider to be a passive avoidance approach for now. When I know I'm going to be just browsing, emailing or Skyping, I'll use Firefox in linux Mint. Otherwise, if I'm in Windows, Firefox only. And avoiding installing non-critical Optional updates, unless it is to fix a specific issue that I'm experiencing - as I have always done.

I just wonder now what's coming next. If Microsoft can get away with this, what's to stop them planting other trojan devices (which is what this is) in in any critical system update, as it suits their purpose and agenda, and I wouldn't at all put it past them:

Further, Microsoft has a plan to disenfranshise your CPU --- removing support for processors after Skylake which would require Windows 10 to even function. The same for AMD processors:

Microsoft: Skylake owners must upgrade to Windows 10 within 18 months, future CPUs will require it | ExtremeTech

Your legacy devices will, according to the article (which information is available in multiple places, it's not just an internet rumor) not have drivers available....or support for such things as USB3.1, etc. unless you drink the Microsoft kool-ade.

Re: Windows 10 free?

The concluding remarks in that article convey some sense of optimism that linux will still be an option, quote:

"Long-term, however, the trend is clear: Microsoft intends to move the entire Windows ecosystem to Windows 10, and those who prefer older versions of the operating system will either have to make do with current hardware or switch to Apple or Linux".

I would really like to believe that's true.

Re: Windows 10 free?

Amazing isn't it? The EU made a fuss about Internet Explorer being included in Windows because it was an almost monopoly situation, but I have yet to hear anything about this much worse situation from them.

Bryan, I am reasonably sure that the Linux and BSD developers will find ways to be compatible with whatever hardware turns up. I certainly hope so especially since, as you know, I only keep Windows (7) as a VM on my editing computer for running scoring software. Otherwise I use Linux for everything and I could do without the scoring software at a pinch.

My wife has Windows 8 or 8.1, she has kept Microsoft updates turned off since she got the machine and has yet to have any problems, just updating Firefox, Thunderbird and firewall, antivirus etc. now and then. I guess the crunch will come when something like Adobe Digital Editions (the main reason she sticks with Windows) gets updated and will no longer run on her machine and that will be a pile of sh*t I do not want to get involved in!

Well I support Microsoft for this. Why should they support new hardware with an old OS ? Creating drivers for lots of new hardware cost money and I think that should fall to the hardware manufacturer not Microsoft. If these hardware manufacturers do not want to do that then Microsoft shouldn't either. I have a HP laser printer with no driver support after Win XP !! Of no use to anyone I know !! If you buy a new PC with new features why would you expect it to work on an old OS ? Certainly true if you buy a Mac.

I have 2 PC's with WIN 10 now, loaded Shutup 10 and turned everything off except critical updates. They run great a little faster in my experience. I will make a new PC in a few weeks and it will certainly be WIN10.

I came across a post on another videography forum today (in a thread devoted to this very same subject) that brought attention to this article:

Windows 10 illegal: Richterin zwingt Microsoft zum Zwangs-Downgrade - CHIP

I don't speak German, but the poster commented "Today (note the calendar date!) the German magazine CHIP reports that the free but forced Windows 10 upgrade has been ruled illegal due to unfair competition, and Microsoft was sentenced to have it revoked during the coming 3 months... Including altered GWX messages displaying the opposite content than before"

From what I understand will everyone that has used the automatic update from windows 7 or 8 to 10 be forced to downgrade to their previous OS. Only Microsoft cannot do that with users that did a clean install.

But hey, it's the first of April you know ;)

To be perfectly honest I don't like the interface at all ..it seems to be designed for kindergarden users. I found it frustrating but it was on my wife's computer not my work machine and she quickly decided to revert right back to Win7 Pro !! Luckily the downgrade back to Win7 or 8 is quick and painless as long as you do it within 30 days of upgrading to Win10 ... I'm staying on Win 7 for now.. At least I can get to software I need quickly and easily without lots of little screens popping up asking me what I want to do!!

My edit pc is still on windows 7 and I plan to keep it that way because I see no reason to fix anything that isn't broken but my wife has windows 10 now for a while on her pc. It has been rocksolid so far and all her programs work. I have used her pc a few times and while it does take some time to get used to I find it better and more polished then windows 7.

I have downloaded and installed many thime on my Wndows 7 box, to see if if the problem I was having with Vegas in that particular box might have been resolved. Each time I used the on board capability of returning to Window 7 and have done so without loss of any on board programs. My issue has to be a driver problem somewhere in the box, and I haven't been able to solve it. But I would suggest trying to load the Windows 10 and see how everything runs. It will take about an hour or two, and returning the box to Windows 7 is very fast. Maybe, half an hour at most.

I have a older program I need for my bookkeeping that won't run on windows 10, that's one of the reasons I am not upgrading, I just don't see any benefit right now to upgrade to 10, eventhough I recently have purchased a new pc. Everything I need and use for my editing runs stable on win 7 pro.

I agree wholeheartedly about the interface. It's probably the intention to have it so simple that kids can pick it up almost straight away. On the other hand, I prefer Win 7 for when you just want to get work done.

Re: Windows 10 free?

Thanks - yes, I was aware of Never10, but I'd held off on using it, or GWX-CP, as I'm always a bit wary of tools that make registry changes. Plus I was (reasonably) confident that I had passively evaded Win10 upgrade "implants" by not installing those optional updates known to harbor the upgrade widget and the last two "important" cumulative IE11 updates - and browsing only with Firefox or in Linux.

Trying Never10 just now however, it reports that "Windows 10 OS Upgrade is ENABLED on this system". Well I never! With that knowledge (after a full system disc back-up) I've installed the cumulative IE11 updates and set Never10 to "Disable Win10 Upgrade". I'll see how it goes.

Re: Windows 10 free?

I just cloned my win 7 pro drive to a separate drive and upgraded to win10pro on my main drive for free while the offer still lasted, I can still go back to my win7 pro installation because it's configured to not receive or install updates and it's not going to be updated at all anymore, I have it like this for the last years and it has worked out fine for my editing purposes.

I just wanted to testdrive win10pro to see if it's worth my time, there will come a time where we won't have any other choice to upgrade and while it's offered free I thought now was the best time to try out.

I did a upgrade instead of a clean install so I didn't waste any time reinstalling all my programs and drivers and so far all seems to be working fine, one thing that was extremely annoying is the windows update part as they don't allow you anymore to select what updates you want/don't want installed. Edius 8 requires a specific driver to make quicksync work and windows update kept overwriting that driver with the latest one, it took me a while to find out what changes I needed to make and to finally found a tool from Microsoft that allows you to hide certain driver updates so windows leaves them alone.

Now it's time to try it out :)
