Odd.

I could buy @ $249 and start my own arbitrage business with UK customers.

Sure blew away my false preconceptions of Shenzhen. For some reason I envisioned factories with puffing smoke stacks and huge warehouses and grunge. lol sure got that wrong.
So what is this all about Mark? Do tell more svp

Mark, great looking video and a great price for a 4k camera. How is the autofocus on this camera? Will it continuously track a person for focus? How is the low light/available light in dark scenes hold up? Any chance I can get a download of the original files off the camera so I can look close and try some color grading?

Alex

Thanks. I have uploaded an original, straight from the camera, ungraded DCI 4K Zlog clip from the Zhejiang Campus video to Vimeo. You can download the original, by downloading the "Original" file, not any of the other resolutions (you may have to put a .MOV extension on the downloaded file). If you want some other clips from the videos, let me know.

The link:

AF performance is on par with that of the Panasonic cameras; I would not use any of them to track focus. Low-light is about the same as the Panasonic GH4, pretty decent.

It is fun, but you must update the firmware to .30 (easy). Don't even try using it with older firmware. And you have to get used to using the buttons, even for changing aperture, shutter, ISO. Two buttons are assignable (I use one for ev adjustment and the other for focus magnification), and check focus when you can by using the button for focus magnification. Push button to focus using AF is also very useful. The quality of the results continues to impress me, from this little thing.

Found it. Thank you, Mark. Can you upload the same type of ungraded clips with people in the scene and some normal (not slo mo or timelapse) motion?

I will do that. Right now, though, I am in China shooting video and cannot upload anything to YouTube or Vimeo. So, a few days.

The up-arrow button below the function button is the push-to-focus button. Pushing it forces the AF to focus. The most important buttons are this button and the MF assist button (which one assigns) that magnifies the image. The latter is useful for both manual focusing and checking that the AF has focused on what you want (which with Panasonic focusing is not always the case). The magnified image is very clear, and the magnification allows one to gage or achieve focus precisely

Brian, I'd like to know if you found a good price in Canada.

Also, is there a video recording time limit as is often the case with cheaper cameras?

Thanks

The Z Camera E1 has no recording limit. Moreover, if one gets a usb-to-barrel connector cable, the camera can be powered externally using any usb battery pack of the type used for cell phones (5V 2A).

The video in the post above was shot by me to test the low-light.

Here is another video, shot by me:

Good to know both of those things. Inching closer to dropping the cash. And from a video you posted in another thread it seems reasonable in low light.

My primary use would be as B camera for indoor speaking events. Did a day long event a few weeks back, 2 cameras, 3 audio recorders/wireless mics. Checking/changing batteries got old fast.

Low Light, Noise and Noise Reduction

Everyone is obsessed with low-light and noise. Here's a video with two very low-light scenes shot with a nonfast lens (F4) on the Z Camera E1. For each scene the out-of-camera shot is first followed by the Neat Video NR application. Two observations: 1. The Z Camera noise is visible, but has no chroma content - and there is no smearing of detail (unlike on many Sony small-sensor cameras and Yi action cams), so the in-camera NR is light. 2. The Neat Video NR is quite good - the noise almost disappears, and the detail is retained. See the noise in the first clip around the number 1490 on the car.

When I upload a DCI 4K video, it is displayed in the UHD Window with its aspect ratio retained (no squeeze), so you see top and bottom bars.

Both. If you look at the posted videos I label them if I shot Zlog. Otherwise it's rgb . I shoot vlog if I think I need extra dynamic range.

Happy New Year to you, and enjoy the Z E1.
