best way to final cut t1 footage and strange reds... at DVinfo.net

Ok so I've just picked up a t1 and I'm having a blast shooting vids with it. Stills as well of course, but for now I'm toying with the vids. I've set final cut to apple intermediate codec 720p 30 via the easy setup menu. I export using quick time conversion h.264 best quality. It seems as though the quality of the clips is degraded a bit after I work with them in final cut express and export. Are my settings right for getting the best out of the t1's 720 footage? Also, I get artifacts around bright red objects like shirts. Red seems to be the only color that does this...besides straight white lines of course. Any suggestions?
