Wayne, good link.

As far as the bulbs blowing in shop lights, most units I've seen have sheets of glass covering the bulb. I'd consider it a very important safety factor if you are shopping around for a set of these lights.

The safety glass has to be for the light to be UL CUL or CSA approved. Not a good idea to be removing safety shields. Apart from personal injury the hot glass will perminently scar a carpet or upholstery.

blue gel

Ok, since you guys mentioned blue gel,
Let's say a couple cheap 500w halogen shop lights are the extent of my lighting arsenal. If I wanted to create a blue light to simulate moonlight in a fog filled horror movie, could I get away with blue gell in front of one of the shop lights? I'm not talking about blue gel to correct the warm color of halogen, I mean an actual blue light. What would be the most practical way to achieve this? (and least expensive)

Thanks
Adam

Gels come in various grades from colour temp adjustment to changing the colour of the light. Do a search on Google for a distributor near you and check out what they have.
