okay, i just realized i have a decision to make. what do you think i should go for, the 16X of the 14X? i am somewhat on a small budget. any ideas?

Bob Safay June 5th, 2006 05:04 PM

I guess it would depend on what you are shooting. The 14X has that great iris ring that can not be beat for perfect exposure like when doing interviews. However, if you are doing wildlife then the 16X gives you a bit more reach, plus, it has a rocker controlled zoom. It is a lot heavier that the 14X. Bob

if you're doing drama you may want the extra reach as well to get a shallower cheated DoF.

Henry Cho June 5th, 2006 09:35 PM

the 14x is a really nice lens. i've owned both lenses twice (used em, then sold em), but decided to keep a 16x. i need the stationary front element of the 16x, which seems to be a minor point in the plus column, but becomes important when you start throwing stuff in front of the lens like a clamp-on mattebox, or one of the home-kit 35mm adapters. that said, more often that not, i miss the 14x. the extra reach of the 16x hasn't proven to be more useful for my purposes, and the two ND filters in the 16x are convenient, but there are a myriad of ways to exercise light control. optically, they're virtually the same. the thing with the 14x that makes it so cool is it's sweet iris ring. the iris ring gives this lens a lot of character, enough so, in my eyes, to differentiate it from the 16x as a totally different lens, and if i could afford it, i'd have both. if it weren't for the stationary front element of the 16x, i think i would have kept the 14x instead.

the 14x lenses being offered here are a steal IMHO.
