Low cost LANC control

Did anyone tried the LANC-1 low cost controller sold by Markerteck? At $39.99, I decided to give it a try. Although the catalog says it works with the GL-2, it does not. Maybe I am doing something wrong, but what can be wrong in simply plugging the cable to the camera's LANC input.
If plugged before turning the camera on, nothing works. If plugged during pause, it works beautifully. If I put the camera on standby, either through the LANC controller or directly on the camera, the LANC controller is death.
