I finally got around to looking at the GC...
I finally got around to looking at the GC website, and light is beginning to dawn in my cobwebby brain. Am I understanding that the GC 4000 gimbal has a two-axis gimbal? This would explain the issues...

Even with the screen out on one side,...
Even with the screen out on one side, theoretically you are compensating for this by shifting the weight of the camera to the opposing side when balancing. This does create a bit of a weird mass....
