Make sure you have "Movie Exposure" set to manual. Its under the second drop down on the menu.

this is certainly not the precise place to ask, but for someone on a budget the Canon 50mm 1.8 looks very appealing because of the sub 100 price tag. Is it worth it, or would I be wasting my money?

Or do you know of any videos online that did? I plan on shooting one in the near future and am unsure of the lighting situation and how to do it effectively.
