When you say "letterboxed", do you mean that there are black pillars on the left and right of the screen? If so, how wide are the black pillars? Is the image distorted, i.e. does it look stretched?...

It's cute effect. My guess as to how - the shot was filmed very wide, so that both seating positions are in frame. Tha camera is locked off for the two takes. Then it's just a matter of splitting...

Frank, I think if you look at your footage in a monitor, you will be relieved. The image in the LCD shows very exaggerated stutter and posterization at 24 or 25p.
