Re: Crane for DSLR use with motorized head... any experiences?

I've used many, many remote heads over the years, from the top-of-the-line gyro stabilized ones down to completely kludgy homebuilds (the most memorable used hydraulic fluid to transmit pan and tilt;...

Re: Monitoring S-Log color

Setting a LUT on set doesn't supercede what will happen in the color session, it does mean that the footage going to editorial and dailies will get an approximation of the final look so it's not a...

Re: Monitoring S-Log color

I used the HDLinks on "Key & Peele" last season with the F3's (because we were shooting 422 S-log and at that time all of the outputs were s-log) and we were able to dial in most of our looks with...

Re: Learning to fly......the Merlin

Hi Marcus: sadly, I'm a bit of a hack with the Merlin, as are many big-rig operators. It's so damn delicate! Kind of like: a real helicopter pilot won't automatically be a good RC helicopter pilot,...

Re: Shoulder Mount like this?

That's an impressive design for the money. The two things I would say that despite the three or four inches of fore-aft travel that was included, the weight will only stay centered if one's lenses...

Re: 5 things about the C300

Dylan, you weren't supposed to tell anyone our little secret...

Anyway, I can see what you are saying about the prosumer badge. To me the term "professional" means one who is paid for what they do....

Re: 5 things about the C300

Missed a bunch of stuff here as I was embroiled in a couple of busy work days. Yesterday I was finishing up a project I've been shooting that was a lot of fun, a spoof of "The Bachelor"...

Re: 5 things about the C300

Here's how simple it could be: Amazingly, we have managed to bring forward a standard from the film world without any inexplicable modification, which is the 15mm mini-rod configuration that can be...

Re: 5 things about the C300

Dylan, which pro cameras are you referring to? I can think of exceptions, but for what I would think of as pro video and film cameras, the overwhelming majority were designed to be shoulder-mounted...

Re: Monitoring S-Log color

Doug, next time you are shooting high-contrast footage (such as subject in shade, background in sun), it would be great if you could roll off and then post a full-res frame grab of your preferred...

Re: C300 with Canon OS lens

Paul, many operational differences between the 2/3" zooms and still zooms, which were never designed for continuous shooting. Starting with the shortened zoom range (the longest being 10x with...

Re: Tropical Blackbird In Action

Every stabilizer of this type is prone to the issue as you described, Noa (losing horizon when moving sideways). It's not a design issue as much as part of the finesse of the operator. The solution...

Re: S-Log / Green Screen - Suggestions?

I can see the logic of a fully-controlled green screen shoot being shot out of s-log--I guess. But of course many times green screen elements are shot within a given scene (i.e. bring in the...

Re: Canon EOS 5D Mk. II cameras shoot Act Of Valor

Wow, I stand corrected. At the screening I was studying it and thought it was so-so Steadicam, but yeah, I guess it was good handheld! And yes, maybe post stabilization would explain the funkiness in...

Re: Tropical Blackbird In Action

Paul, you have a very developed sense of "cornering", that is, dialing in the pan as you approach and take a corner or doorframe. Budding stabilizer operators should take note. The technique requires...

Re: Canon EOS 5D Mk. II cameras shoot Act Of Valor

I know the shot you guys are referring to. I believe that was Steadicam (not me) but yes, the highlights in the background between the actors are quite distracting.

Re: Is the F3 for me?

On "Key and Peele", I used an HD Link Pro to dial in LUT's with the F3 (pre-current firmware, so all outputs were s-log in 422). On Alexa shoots, I toggle between the s-log and REC709. So actually,...

Re: Is the F3 for me?

I would say that for anyone who is shooting footage that will be color corrected, espcially in contrasty environments that can't always be controlled, S-log is well worth it. If the post pipeline...

Re: Is the F3 for me?

I totally disagree. It's about capturing a range of values that you can then manipulate in post as required. The more range you have to work with, the more you can fit into the delivery master.

Re: Is the F3 for me?

S-log makes a huge difference to the look of the footage produced by the F3. Much more control and greater dynamic range as you noted. It's almost like two different cameras.
