Buy a circular polarizer and a linear polarizer and stack them. That is all a variable ND filter is anyway.

Tamron 17-50 (non-VC)
Canon 28-135
Canon 50 f1.8

These seem to catch any situation I've come up against in my first two...

For 2K, nothing comes close. Not having to mess with DOF adapters, great low light, stealth design (video cam posing as a still cam) and interchangable lenses make this an absolute steal....

With dollies the background moves a lot slower than with a pan, add to that the fact that most dollies are very slow and you tend not to have any problems
