I guess I'm a bit more agnostic even though I'm a pretty big Canon camera/camcorder fan...but they do work in mysterious ways, don't they? ;)

I just think they have a niche with smaller chip...

That's the hope. Not holdin' my breath on it though.

As much as I like Canon, they're still only going to do what's in their best long-term interests and not necessarily what their users want at...

I don't really have any experience with After Effects in this stuff, but from what I gather it's pixel motion analysis is similar to the optical flow technology in Shake/Compressor. I'm sure it would...

I actually got to submit some straight-to-disk uncompressed XL-H1 SDI stuff to Mike at CD and he put the material through their recorder with the 100mb recording mode and sent me back the resultant...

Hey Robert,

Didn't you mention that it was actually projected in 4K? If so, what was the process? Did you upres the material yourself, or was it all done by some hardware system? Also, did you...

It's just a general observation. I've never before attempted to turn 30p into 24p, expecting a jumpy, stuttery, unconvincing result. I finally gave it a whirl the other day with Compressor, and the...

It was a 4000 with no steady shooter arm and vest. I think you could easily get a 2000 or Steadicam Merlin to balance.

It's really only a matter of turning the frame controls on in the...

Can 5D2 30p turn into decent 24p? You be the judge...

I re-timed a few 5D Mk II clips I shot at an outdoor mall at night from 30fps to 24fps through Compressor with its Optical Flow goodness.

I'm shocked by the results. It's far from a perfect...

This is the gospel truth. Great camera but quite prone to rolling shutter issues. Longer focal lengths exacerbate the issues too, so best to avoid any bumpy, jittery, shakey handheld anything....

Indeed. It's definitely another realm of image quality--too bad the image control in video mode is almost insultingly limited. Still, this is Canon's first pro-ish DSLR with 1080p video, so I'm not...

Thanks John, have fun--it's a cool camera...but in a sort of 'Crazy Uncle Ted' way.

Never 100% predictable even with a manual Nikon lens...but very interesting nonetheless.

Some 5D2 Grabs and a clip from a shoot last night

Park City, UT. 13 degrees outside. :)

I used two LED lights and a Nikon 85mm lens (via Nikon/EOS adapter)

The camera has plenty of issues when it comes to video, but wow, the quality that can...

We just got one yesterday, and after a bit of testing, I would say that although the bit rate is higher, it's just about the same as HDV in quality--maybe slightly better, and I would compare that to...

I think the 100mbs Long GOP is actually superior to standard ProRes, and maybe even equal or better than ProRes HQ, given an 8-bit quantized image.

The XL-H1 doesn't send out 1080 psf, it's just straight 29.97 1080i. The XDR has to detect the cadence of the 24p-within 1080i stream. It will then remove interlace pulldown and then encode as 23.98p...

I had a feeling it would; it's really nice to see the proof now. :)

Again, nice to see that (for once!) the theory is really true. The XDR's encoding in 100 mb is extremely good. I can say...

It will definitely help if it isn't an EX1 image processing issue. I know that I get much sharper rendition of motion when I've recorded to higher bit rate codecs via SDI from the XL-H1. (shutter...

I need to get some A/B pics up, but basically the 100mb mode REALLY DOES hold up visually to the uncompressed sample.
