Re: How are others presenting their long-forms?

You do. Put it in your contract about the rules with the long form. Make sure it's mentioned in another prominent public place - we have it in our price list.

My long form (we call it the 'all...

Re: Anyone using filters for weddings?

We have some neutral density filters to help when we're filming outside during the summer, or even in the winter snow, which reflects a lot of light on a sunny day. Actually had one where f/22 was...

Re: How do you position your lights during the first dance?

I forgot to mention that IF we use our lights, or if the DJ has a decent spotlight, we'll place a camera at a nice low angle and use the light to halo them, a little. This means putting the light up...

Re: Change to full frame better or same as crop

They would say they want a full frame camera because of shallow DOF, or because a full frame camera is generally about two f/stops better in low light. We shoot weddings and use both, because each...

Re: what do some DJs do?

This guy does just about everything wrong. I'm an MC/DJ, 15 years and 500 or so weddings worth of experience and can't tell you how much someone like this pisses me off. But then, I give a sh&t. ...

Re: Contracts and down deposit

I don't call it a deposit OR retainer. I call them 'non-refundable payments.' IF they pay early and then cancel, payments are refundable up until the date they are due.

I do allow that my 'act...

Re: How do you position your lights during the first dance?

Our lights aren't too bright, but we still prefer to have the house lights or some other lighting as the primary. IF we use them, it's from the DJ/band side, on the outside corners.

Our cameras...

Re: Contracts and down deposit

Yes, more up front. For weddings, I structure it so that there are three or four equal payments at 1) booking; 2) December 1st; 3) February 15th; 4) at the event. I don't personally do any at...

Re: Backlight Dilemma

I was going to ask about reflectors or even lights discreetly placed at the front row to add light to their faces. Then mark their positions to stand with a little tape.

How big are the windows? ...

Re: Really bad DJ lights!

Paul, don't know about in Australia, but here in the U.S. lasers are illegal to have pointing anywhere they might hit someone's eye. So you can have them, but they have to not angle down at all.

Re: when has a piece of gear "paid for itself?"

There are three reasons to buy a piece of gear:
1) it allows you to do work you couldn't before. This means new jobs are opened up, and if you start booking them, it will pay for the gear, but out...

Re: Price Sheet // Yay or Nay

Man, I hope you're joking about "ONLY 8 hours of footage."

We have two options now. As single operators, relatively new (2nd year), and husband/wife team (I'm an MC/DJ who does 32 weddings a...

Re: Change to full frame better or same as crop

The Mark II's 12 minute limit is easily worked around, either by personal discipline, or, more likely, Magic Lantern. We haven't had a single problem with it since we started.

My personal...

Re: How much dancing do you supply?

How much is generally determined by what I capture. My first job in my work flow is to line up all respectable footage. Then I go through it to find what is actually interesting. If, after that,...

Re: Does autofocus dslr video work on steadycams?

We have shot a few weddings with our 70D in the mix. It will be another few weeks until I have those edited, though I will post when I have.

The live autofocus is great with any decent light. ...

Re: How do you handle run and gun with a dslr?

I really don't have a hard time run and gunning with our DSLR's, but I practiced my rack focus a lot by filming my kids running around, playing, in the house. That made it low light, too.

If you...

Re: Does autofocus dslr video work on steadycams?

The autofocus can be tricky and I don't recommend it for an unmanned camera, generally, because it might switch subjects. This has been more of an issue in low light for us, using the Canon 70D.

Re: First Dance Music / Blown Out Bass in recording

Totally forgot a nice trick.

Most DJ mixer boards have a button to include or not include the microphone on the recording out.

OR, if you don't want his mic work, record out from the...

Re: First Dance Music / Blown Out Bass in recording

Just a reminder that having your record levels a little low is preferable to too high. Once it's distorted, there is no fixing it. If it's too low, you can always boost it.

If you're able to,...

Re: First Dance Music / Blown Out Bass in recording

Nick, there is an 85% chance the DJ was full of sh*t about the board output. Most mixers have an RCA output specifically for recording. For the future, go ahead and pick up a 1/4" to headphone so...

Re: Making a voice over longer

Audacity is a nice, free audio editor.

Lay down a track of room tone behind your voice, then insert tiny fractions of a second in between phrases or words, when possible. This only works as voice...

Wow.

Coincidentally, very encouraging. My wife and I are considering moving and this is one area we're checking out (along with Bloomington and Columbus, Indiana).

Great work.

It's easy to install and, at least on our Mark ii's, has been incredibly stable. It's possible my battery life is shorter, but I"m not sure. Haven't noticed anything else...

Re: f1.4 no longer vital?

Pete, not having to change lenses on the fly is why we're considering sticking with four cameras. For instance, our two up front/off to the side cameras can keep their 135mm-200mm (depending on the...
