1) You can record for hours, or in some cases, days.
2) Autofocus is so slow on many VDSLRs that it's usually easier just to manually focus, which means risking jostling the lens.
3) You have much...

What I'm trying to ask is: How do I -know- the HMC-40 is going to outperform the HG20?

What's confusing is that, for the most part, 24fps has ALWAYS meant 23.976fps, 30fps has ALWAYS meant 29.97fps... at least, as far as video in NTSC land has been concerned.

The Canon 5d II, by...

Thing is, if I got it, it would be an upgrade for my HG20, and while I like the manual control of the iris and the zebra monitoring, those aren't really big features for me...

The 7D only has 29.97. The 5D only has 30.00.

It is not impossible to sync the two cameras, however. I used a Canon T1i, which records 720p30.00 - and synced it with some 1080p29.97 footage...

I have a Canon HG20 and a 7D.

The 7D - in fact, any VDSLR - is best used in situations where you have complete control of the moment, and have a lot of time to adjust the shot in order to get it...

Editing 30p and 29.97p on a 29.97p timeline

I shot my first wedding. I missed the stand-up photography session (they had it at the church, rather than, as I expected and was lead to believe, the reception) but other than that, I think it went...

I would invest in a Zoom H4n to record audio, as it takes both mini and XLR inputs. If the camera has an option to lock audio gain, I'd recommend a Juicedlink instead, but the H4n's probably your...

What I'm wondering is if Canon can come out with an OPTIONAL firmware upgrade that would allow more than 4GB of recording, but charge for it, to cover the increase in tax.

Indeed. When the 7D was announced with 24p support, I went out that day and canceled my GH1 order and bought a Canon T1i. Yes, it only has 720p30, but that's all I need -right now- and DSLR movie...

I was thinking about buying a 300mm FD lens for my GH1 - this, as far as I can tell, is 600mm equivalent when placed on the FD? Meaning, that a Telephoto 100-300mm f/5.6-6.7 Manual Focus Lens would...
