Re: New and need help for son with Autism

Regarding moving objects, there are generally two approaches: 1) lock down the camera so that the moving object comes into/out of/traverses the space, or 2) track the object.

The challenge with...

Re: Insulating my room

What Richard says.

Fortunately, a server room doesn't make much low frequency sound. It's easier to block highs than lows.

Regarding the rock wool idea. you might put it and/or fiberglass...

Re: New and need help for son with Autism

Hi Michael,

If you buy $3,000 worth of equipment and it doesn't work out, you can probably sell it for at least $2,000. :)

Cameras depreciate a bit (in steps when new models come out)....

Re: New and need help for son with Autism

An additional possibility is timelapse and hyperlapse photography. This can be more technical than straight videography, but it also has an obsessive appeal. And it's a natural fit with construction...

Re: New and need help for son with Autism

One thing I've learned is that video is a "people" business. That can be tough for somebody with autism (or Asperger's, which I'm more familiar with.)

Some of the people aspects are:
1)...

Re: 5D4 Wish List

The rumor sites now claim that the 5D4 sensor will have 30.4 megapixels. Is this true? I have no idea. Don't trust rumors.

That said, it's fun to run the numbers. So... what *if* it's a 36mm x...

Re: 5D4 Wish List

Maybe it will be the 5D Mark "5graphy"

I just realized something: In Japanese, 5 is pronounced "Go". So this event celebrates the "Go D." In other words, it's the god of cameras. ;)

Re: 5D4 Wish List

It looks like Canon is preparing to announce the 5D4 (or whatever it will be called.) Canon has announced an event starting on August 27th in Japan called "Five Graphy"

Here's a human-improved (I...

Re: External Hard drive space vs performance?

The smaller the drive, the higher percentage of free space is needed. The larger the files, the higher percentage is needed. The key is to leave enough space so the disk can be managed and...

Re: "Best" live event budget camera?

BTW, the Sony X70 has a slight advantage from my perspective due to the included HD-SDI.

The XA30 is slightly less expensive right now, but is HDMI only. The XA35 (with HD-SDI) would bump us into...

Re: "Best" live event budget camera?

Good point, Rob,

Given that the Sony X70 is 4K, a digital 2x zoom is viable.

I also see that the Panasonic AG-AC30 would be a candidate....

Re: "Best" live event budget camera?

The Sony and JVC cameras look nice, but lack the long zoom lens of the XA20 and XA30. I really need that feature to capture close ups from the back of the room.

In fact, the XA30's extra gain...

Re: "Best" live event budget camera?

Funny you mention it. My son has a BM Pocket Camera that we were thinking of using for the fixed, wide cam. His lens is a 60mm equivalent. He mentioned that picture quality could be limited, both due...

"Best" live event budget camera?

There's no one "best" camera, but there often is a "best" for a narrow set of requirements. And there are likely different "bests" at various price points. [/DisclaimerMode]

In this case, the...

Re: C100 MkI Pricing? Buy now or wait?

My guess is that it will have 4K in order to compete with the A7S and to stay viable for the next few years. That said, you're probably right about log profile. Canon's DSLRs are obnoxiously shy on...

Re: What Storage is Right for Me?

A big consideration is the codec that you shoot with and the number of layers that you composite. If the content is highly compressed and you use few layers, a simple SSD will do the trick. Use HDDs...

Re: Digital Bolex closes shop

Yeah, you don't *need* 16mm, 12-bits, global shutter, but it would be a killer cam for greenscreen action footage. 8-bit, encoded, rolling shutter video simply can't compete when it comes to...

Re: C100 MkI Pricing? Buy now or wait?

How about one with a larger sensor?

5D4? September?

Of course, it might not have all the video features, but I'd be surprised if it doesn't include non-aliasing 4K in an ASP-C-like window as...

Re: C100 MkI Pricing? Buy now or wait?

I think the better question is whether you need one in the near future (and can make any money off it.) If so, buy. If not, wait. There are always newer/better cameras and unexpected good deals in...

Re: Banding with LED lig

The thing about collecting light is appropriate. At 1/60 you will collect it for two full cycles. At 1/120, you get one cycle. The frame rate changes the phase. Maybe you open the shutter when there...

Re: Banding with LED lights

Shoot at 1/60 or 1/120 in 60 Hz regions. Lamps light on both the positive and negative swings, so they flash at 120Hz.

Re: Live Production/Streaming Challenge

The switcher looks like just what I need. I used to design switchers in the early 90s at Grass Valley Group, and it looks like this has the main items that I'd need. The GVG switchers had an "E-Mem"...
