Re: New 5D Mk3 User

Because of the softness or noise?

Re: recorded audio out of sync w/video, even in camera?

I don't see it on my Mark 3, I don't have a Mark 2 so I can't comment on that...

Re: recorded audio out of sync w/video, even in camera?

That is insane!
Sounds like it's time for a trip to the service shop... at least it wasn't operator error!

Re: New 5D Mk3 User

I haven't needed to go above 3200 ISO, so I can't speak to what the upper limit might be... but at 3200 ISO with a nice fast zoom, I've not even needed to use noise reduction in post... very nice and...

Re: recorded audio out of sync w/video, even in camera?

What about playing back the original h264 files from the camera with orig audio using quicktime?
Is that audio out of sync too?

Re: Matching 5DM3 and T2i

I'll be shooting with a 5DM3 and a 60D later this month and just assumed most of the heavy lifting regarding matching footage would have to happen in post. They'll both be dialed in as closely as the...

Re: Matching 5DM3 and T2i

I probably would not have expected them to match perfectly and would count on getting a more precise match in post. If you shoot a gray card with both cameras, you should be able to match them up...

Re: Switched from Dish to DirectTV

I hear what you're saying Les, but the thought of paying for a warranty on equipment that I don't own is pretty unfair too.

If I spill something on the equipment for example or do something to...

Switched from Dish to DirectTV

So I switched from Dish Network to DirectTV because I have to have AMC. Can't go without Breaking Bad or The Walking Dead! Love those shows.

I never had any technical issues with the Dish...

Re: Zoom 4Hn vs Beachteck pre-amps

Like I said, I didn't really see anything major wrong with the audio in your clip. pretty clean for the built-in mic I thought. An additional mic would help more than a separate recorder.

Re: Zoom 4Hn vs Beachteck pre-amps

I would say there is nothing wrong with the quality of the audio in that clip, but it sounds like it was recorded with an on-board mic. This is due to the wind noise and the fact that it sounds a...

Re: Zoom 4Hn vs Beachteck pre-amps

On the zoom, 16bit - 48Khz .wav format will work great for you. I don't know the signal/noise ratio... I try not to clutter my brain too much with numbers if I don't have to. This setting will work...

Re: Suggestions for format to send to color grader

If that won't work for you, we'll need to know what your colorist's application is before we can recommend anything... but most likely, you'll need to ask the colorist this question.

Re: Suggestions for format to send to color grader

If your colorist can do the job with the Colorista II plugin you won't need to transcode anything. Just send the project and footage as is and let them color grade within FCP. Depending on how...

Re: Zoom 4Hn vs Beachteck pre-amps

Oh, and no preamp in this setup either... but I would assume your mileage will vary based on which mic you choose... The ME66 sounds great, but also since I'm booming, I'm getting a lot closer than I...

Re: Zoom 4Hn vs Beachteck pre-amps

Sure thing... although there's not much to elaborate on...

I'm using a Sennheiser ME66 mic to boom. XLR out of the mic to a generic adapter that I picked up from Guitar Center... it's an XLR to...

Re: Easier to focus on the mk3 LCD?

Nice tip Charles!
The AF button will even work while recording which is nice little bonus... as long as you can cut out the little flutter that happens in post.

Re: 171E (Quick question)

No problem Jonathan... as Sanjin suggest, make sure you have the appropriate drivers handy. OSX Lion might not need them, but most everything else probably will. Otherwise, the OS may not recognize...

Re: 171E (Quick question)

You should be able to select firewire or USB to download the footage through the camera.
A card reader is nice, but you don't have to have it.

I use USB on my HPX-170, and it's a tad bit faster...

Re: Zoom 4Hn vs Beachteck pre-amps

FWIW, I normally use the H4N to record audio, but had a job where capturing sound in camera was really the only way it would work, I almost decided to use my HPX-170, but knowing they have made nice...

Re: Easier to focus on the mk3 LCD?

I used to have a 60D which was impossible to focus without using the zoom, but I loved the flipout screen.
The Mark3 is a much better screen, but I do miss my flip-up screen. But same as Charles, I...

Re: Hissing sound on 5DMK3

There is no noise reduction applied to the audio that is fed to the headphones. As long as the audio on the final recording sounds good, this is normal (or at least expected...)

Just did a test...

Re: SpeedGrade question

There is a fairly recent update to Speedgrade (as well as most of the CS6 apps too) if you check for them through Adobe Updater.
I found that SG worked a lot better after the last update. Before the...

I have heard of folks having pretty nice results sharpening footage shot with a 5DM3... I think some even apply some sharpening just before encoding to hopefully counteract some of the sharpness lost...

Re: First music video with Canon 5D Mark III

Thanks for taking the time to offer your comments Robert!
Some nice suggestions there.

The shallow DOF was actually pretty critical to the whole shoot, not the least of which was the fact we had...
