Re: Dining on Campus
Welp... I have to admit, Brock... you just made me hungry.
On that result alone, I'd say it's a success. I can't find any fault with the camera work -- everything looks crisp and bright, as it should for this sort of promo piece. What I like in particular is that there's a very pleasing blend between static shots and moving frames. I tend to get fairly grumpy when it comes to cameras in motion -- not everything has to be shot with a slider -- but that's not what this is. It's a mix, in my opinion a very nicely seasoned mix of static frames and moving frames. As far as I'm concerned that's exactly what you want, a good blend of both, and in this particular edit I think it's been done very well. The only criticism I have for you may or may not be valid, I'm not sure because it's just a personal preference thing for me, but I thought the some of the cuts were just a bit too quick in the first thirty seconds or so (some, not all). I know it can be a real challenge to get everything that you want into a two-minute piece. If it were me, I'd sacrifice one or two of those shots and stretch the others to fit. Even 15 or 20 frames each would make all the difference in my opinion. But that could just be my old age revealing itself. No doubt the target audience for this promo has been raised on fast cuts, so it's probably not even an issue. It's definitely a thumbs-up from me. I think it looks great, and I appreciate your sharing it with us. |

Re: Dining on Campus
I honestly felt the exact same way about the cuts being a little too quick in that section of the video. I thought about going and tweaking it a little, but I got a little lazy and figured it was just me. Good to know I'm not the only one.
Regarding the variety of shots, I appreciate that feedback. Admittedly, I've been a victim of my own reliance on moving shots in the past and I'm working on mixing everything up more (gimbal, tripod, high angle, low angle) to give my videos more interest, so it's good to hear you say you felt like this had a nice variety. Thanks! |

Re: Dining on Campus
I watched it, intending to critique, but then realised I'd been watching it, not studying it - classic got it right scenario when somebody supposed to be looking at it for all the usual reasons, forgot to do so.
Having watched it again, I see nothing I'd like to change. Oddly the one thing that really annoyed me was the two nose rings. because they were dark, they looked at first like a weird shadow, then something drawn on, then with more study, I realised it was nose jewellery. Just me, I think - but they actually look like some kind of deep crevices. Nowadays, you can't really broach this kind of subject, like we did for years. That huge wristwatch catches the eye, or those dangly earrings might be better replaced with something smaller - or even comments about hair, makeup and eyes. Now people are allowed to look like they personally like. It clearly doesn't apply here anyway as the students they are targeting don't care anyway. I found I missed things first time through because I was wondering how US university students can afford to eat like this? In UK universities, on-site food is very limited and often horrible, and off-site it's McDonalds, Kentucky or Burger King. Just eat might bring in Indian, or Chinese from a bit further away. The stuff in your video is not financially viable here. Our students are poor! |

Re: Dining on Campus
Thanks for the kind words Paul!
Typically the students here in the U.S. will get a "meal plan" that's paid for in their tuition. The money doesn't come out of their pocket and they'll typically just swipe their student ID to register one meal eaten - which will then be subtracted from their total meals allotted that semester. Students (or parents) end up paying for the food, but by getting a meal plan it's typically more affordable than just trying to buy all these meals all semester long. If students want to go off campus, they then typically then need to pay "out of pocket." |

Re: Dining on Campus
I agree with all that was said by others.
The only thing that I wondered at first was if Marshal was an all girls school. The few male students in the video did not show up until about the 1:28 mark. Which I think is a bit late. A prospective male student may not want to wait around that long it see if there are students that he can relate to.
