E-Mount equivalent to 24-70 2.8?

My trusty Tamron 24-70 2.8 has packed it in. So rather than just buying another I thought I'd try to see if I could manage without the need for an adaptor.

Main criteria is image stabilisation, plus at least some zoom for flexible shooting. Constant aperture would be nice but I'm guessing unlikely.

So what is there on offer from Sony??

Sadly nothing Clive - F4 is the best you'll get in a short zoom as far as I can see - and they are Zeiss which IMO are overpriced - I am disappointed with Sony's lens offerings. I use my Zeiss 24-70 F4 for weddings during the day because the autofocus is handy and my Tamron 24-70 f2.8 for evening receptions.

Re: E-Mount equivalent to 24-70 2.8?

Last week I was on a shoot where we had a couple of FS7's and an A7s -- and we had two different 24-70's --
There is an E-mount Sony 24-70 4.0 lens that might be fine for you -- but I'd say you should check out the ergonomics first. The glass is good, I'm personally not crazy about the way the focus ring works when in manual. And obviously at 4.0 you're not going to throw the backgrounds as far out of focus as a 2.8 lens would do. However the lens really is quite small and light.
We also had the older Sony/Zeiss alpha mount 24-70 2.8 with an LA-EA adapter (I don't remember which generation adapter). Beautiful glass, 2.8 all the way through, I like its focus system better, but it's large and heavy. I also don't think it has optical image stabilization. Makes beautiful images though!

Clive,

The e-mount PZ 18-105 G is well worth considering for what you are looking for. Again just f4, but constant. It has its compromises but overall I am happy with mine. And the current price is down to $548.00. Well worth that.

And it is TACK SHARP. And being a servo zoom, manual focus is not great.

Steve

Edit, this is the lens that does not work well on Sony FX7 and other FX series cameras. It works perfect on NEX series cameras. What camera do you shoot with?

^^ I also have the 18-105 and it's a decent compromise lens.

Using both the 24-70 and 18-105 G .... not going to lie, I like the fact I get more reach and can go proper wide with the 18-105.

But used with the A7s put's it in aps-c mode so you lose the benefit of full frame - i use the 24-70 and if i want more reach just keep the same lens on but put the camera in aps-c mode - shame sony do not put out a 2.8 zoom e-mount thoughnas there's a need for it

Which Tamron is it Clive? Is it the USD SP 24-70 DI (for full frame) If this is the case I would simply buy another as it's better than any FE-Mount out there - I swap my Zeiss 24-70 F4 for this lens at weddings when I need something faster and the difference is apparent - it's sharper, the colours pop a little more and focussing is way easier - The Tamron is £680 and the Zeiss is over a grand and a poorer lens. I bought mine off Ebay and TBH had I bought it new I would have sent it back - no brainer, get another tamron

Which adapter are you using?

Re: E-Mount equivalent to 24-70 2.8?

For what it's worth, this article on sonyalpharumours state that there might be a new 24-70 FE GM (whatever that means?) coming in September. Which would be IBC, I guess.
Wouldn't make any sense to make another f4 as the Zeiss is already there. Maybe they've licensed the Tamron lens and made a Sony e-mount? Sony already has quite a lot of Tamron lenses rehoused as Sony lenses, don't they? I think a 24-70 f2.8 is one of the most requested lenses, and licensing the Tamron would probably be the fastest way to get one out in the market... It actually would be brilliant as it would mean AF and OSS. Then they can add a 2.8 Zeiss version at a later time.

Re: E-Mount equivalent to 24-70 2.8?

I have the full frame 18-35 Sony Zeiss F2.8 in A mount. As I understand it from Sony, this will not autofocus as well as the new FE lens in E mount for my A7RII after a Sony LAEA adapter is used.
