XDCAM External USB Drive

anyone heard or use the Sony PDW-U1 XDCAM Drive?

$ 2,800 retail.

thats a great price as opposed to renting or buying the deck eh?

That's what I heard @ the ibc. Release date is the same for the new transfer software for FCP.

will the unit accept mastering BACK to the disc (like the f330 or 350 does)?

I mean: Is it a full replacement of an F30 / F70 (regardless of the missing "player functions" of course)?

I was told by a Sony reseller in Germany that the unit isnīt able to "writeback" to XDCAM in its first firmware edition. In the first quarter of 2008 there should be a firmware upgrade, which enables the user to writeback onto XDCAM.

I have heard that you can indeed backup data to it though, right out of the box.

I can't wait to get this thing. Its going to save so much time and money for me.

I donīt quite know why you shouldnīt be able to but thatīs what I was told. Anyhow I too canīt wait to get it as it will save me lots of time!

The information I have is that it will be an ingest only drive at the time of release. Writing data to the disc will occur with a firmware update later on.
