Detail and aperature setting for F335/F355

What detail and aperature settings do you like best for the F335/F355 shooting HD?

Up till now, most of my work with it is in DVCAM mode and I leave the detail ON and set at 0, which is the default. The same for the aperature setting. For my SD stuff, I like the results this gives me, but when I look on the waveform monitor, I'm amazed how strongly it really is overshooting the edges.

When I've shot HD with the camera, I have always turned the detail OFF. I've been happy with the results, though SD downconverts can look a bit softer than if I'd shot them in SD with the detail on, of course. I can tweak this in post, if needed, but that's a very render heavy tweak. I haven't normally needed to do it, though.

I'm curious if I should try shooting HD with the detail ON but set at -20, as mentioned in the PDW700 settings thread?

Any aperature setting tweaks that I should also be doing different from SD to HD?

What do the rest of you do?

Thanks for any info.

I've been quite happy with the factory detail settings (0) on my F330. Using a broadcast monitor as a reference peoples faces seem to be just about right without being able to see into every pore and examine every blemish. Obviously, lighting is part of this equation.

Try it and see what works for you.

Eugene,

If you shoot HD you can still adjust the detail in the downconverted signal when in AVC (capture) mode. The menu is called "SD detail". Saves you the render in post.

I mostly use the low setting and have the HD detail at +5.

Ofcourse this adjustment is not possible in FAM mode.

I shoot with the following.

HD 50i with Detail at -12
HD 25p with detail at -18

I find that gives me enough detail but keeps the hard edges from appearing.
