Hello Hugh,

I am very impressed by the high definition you achieve with your streaming clips. I have never managed to get that kind of sharpness with my V1 footage rendered for the web.

Could I ask you to give some tips on what kind of workflow is needed to achieve that kind of quality?

Thank you.

Hugh Mobley April 20th, 2008 01:13 PM

sure, I film at 1080i sometimes auto, sometimes manual, I capture clips with cineform NEO HDV usually as an avi clip and only deinterlace with cineform. I edit in Vegas 8 as progressive 29.97. and render as mpeg 4 custom, usually 1 pass at 3 mbps progressive at around 550 x 380 aspect. Rendering at a higher bit rate will increase clip size where it takes too long to load. My dvd's of the same clips are coming out almost as good as these and are sd, but are very good. the raw m2t played directly from the camera, on my hd tv are outstanding. Another thing you can try if you have cineform is to cature or convert directly to mov. clips and edit those and then render to mpeg4, colors are little deeper, blacks are little blacker, and so on. you have to see for your self. to play on your computer directly you cloud go to 5-6 mbps or even up to 8 but depending on your computer they may not play well, I use media player classic 6.0 because windows media player is buggy, quick time is no problem. I have tried filming progressive and never been happy with it unless the camera and talent or object is not moving and no panning or camera movement. so this is the way I do it now

V1 clips

here are two clips, one an avi and the other a mov captured with cineform and rendered mpeg4, there is a noticeable difference between the two, same camera settings. they take afew minutes to load, be patient

Thanks a lot Hugh. I use Final Cut Pro but I am pretty new to HDV so I'll have to do some more experimenting with settings and such.

Your workflow seems pretty straightforward so I must be doing something wrong. :-)

Anyway, I had a good look at the .AVI and .MOV clips you posted and the AVI seems more natural to me, the MOV having whites blown up and the blacks pretty squashed.

I'll do some shooting and I'll let you see some stuff ASAP. Thanks again.

Hugh Mobley April 22nd, 2008 05:17 PM

everyone seems to see things just a little different, what I am seeing in the mov clip is slightly sharper, althought someone could sharpen up an avi clip. I will be glad to share my picture profile settings if u you like.

Ormond Memorial Gardens shot with V1U

Small garden park on beachside in Ormond Beach, FL. Just wanted to shoot some tape in a nice setting.

About 11 minutes long, shot in 1080i and rendered to 720p per Vimeo standard's in Vegas. My gosh it looks good in 1080i on my dispay here at home, but I reckon this isnt' too bad for internet. First upload to Vimeo.

New camera, HG0862K lens and Manfrotto tripod, and I wasn't really taking my time with shot set ups, zooms and pans. Did about 30 minutes of tape in 40 minutes. It was the middle of the day in Florida, and HOT!

Darkened it up a little in post, as it was very bright and a little over exposed in the sunny areas, camera was in auto. I know a little more about the camera and it's settings now.

Learned a lot watching this for future shoots.

Great stuff Ralph, and very moving. I hope it gets picked up.

FYI, I get some inspiration from the clips you post. I'm planning some "nature" filming trips here in Florida. We have a lot of beatiful areas here too, but a little "flatter" terrain.

Thanks,

Jamie

Why so short? Did I miss something? The audio is distorted too.

Langston Sessoms June 29th, 2008 12:23 PM

it was a test clip. i probably should've said that. The audio is distorted because i was at a loud ass concert and was way too close to the speakers. that s song was definitely playing louder than some of the other stuff i recorded.

Oren Arieli June 29th, 2008 06:35 PM

What are you testing though?

I know it goes to the Smithsonian, its quite amazing to see, we were just getting set up and in came the pubic, very crowded, we should have shot at a different time, our video was for an upcoming TV show on public tv

Trunk: Short Horror Film

Starring Jessica Edwards and Kerry Stanley

Filmed with a Sony HVR-V1E Camera and Letus35 Extreme Adapter. 28mm and 50mm Nikon Lenses.

Also using a Proam DVC250 Camera Crane and a Glideshot Dolly Track.

My first time using my Letus35 Extreme, and Camera Crane and Dolly Track

Unfortunately, my dolly track shots are shakey because my tripod is too light to hold my camera however, i have a new tripod which now gives me smooth shots which can take the weight of my camera. My crane shots were also shakey because my camera was too heavy and i need to place heavier weights on the end which i havent bought yet. I also need a new mic since im using my camera mic and it gives me quite a 'flat' sound.
