to Christopher Haering
i saw the video few days ago on german satelite channel.
in full pal resolution. despite really really nice work - i saw also two strange, very small circless (rings) at the very top of the screen. (approx 1/30th of the screen size - but visible) did anyone saw this? those circles/rings were rotating - in my opinion - the same way as p+s. so it's some kind of artefact visible in this movie. i can't tell how many times those circles are visible (i saw the clip just once on PAL Tv). but i noticed it just when the bright sky is in the shot. Christopher, can you explain us little bit more? thanks, filip |
Hi Filip!
That's funny.. I came here to post exactly the same! :-) I have already seen the video a number of times on TV already but most of the time on smaller TVs and I never looked as carefully as this time - and I noticed the same! It's strange... dunno if it was only in this broadcast or if it's always there. I'll have a look at MTV & Co. the next days and look at it again carefully if I catch it again. Perhaps it's really some "artefact" of the P+S?! Looked like the center of some rotating ground glass... some wicked mixup in their setup?! Or maybe the Mini35 is yet incompatible with the FX1? I'm really curious too... |

i think that (as i remember) since it shows just on very bright parts - maybe is just a reflection from the GG surface? you know - sometimes you can see the "amplified" reflection when i.e. you shooting in the dark and the car is passing buy. many times you will see double or triple reflection of these car lights because it reflects from the lens surface and than again from the filter, and than again from the lenses... etc. maybe is similar in that case. anyone who is using P+S technik noticed that? filip |
Hm just nearly missed the clip again... so I didn't get captures from scenes where it was even more noticable but I got this one:
http://misc.soeren.de/emanuela1.jpg The rotating "artefact" (dark circle) is in the upper middle of the picture (ignore the letterboxing ;o) ... it's most noticable when the image is relatively bright in that area and it's always in the same location what makes it even more noticeable. This is only the part of interest (from the same frame, contrast enhanced) http://misc.soeren.de/emanuela2.jpg .. and this from a few frames earlier or later: http://misc.soeren.de/emanuela3.jpg Looks like the center of a rotating ground glas or something?! Weird! Cheers |
As the clip seems to be on heavy rotation here I just got it complete from MTV.. however the image quality (too much compression somewhere on the line) of MTV here via cable is so bad that you can't spot it as easily as previously on the other channel.
And I have to correct my previous post: sometimes it's not exactly in the same place but a little bit off center - could be due to image resizing/cropping in post or because the adapter/optics where moved sometimes?! |
There's a new "edit" of the video available on his site with some set fotos in the background where on some occasions you can spot the cam setup! So I guess it's "officially" confirmed now. ;-P

rotating rings in the ground glass
hi guys, the rotating rings was dirth in the ground glass.
I could not see these rotating rings. by the way .. i shoot a new video on the sony FX1 with P+S Image Connverter. http://www.ch71.de/clips/suchasurge_tag.mov tom selleck is back !!! |
Re: rotating rings in the ground glass
New video looks great Chris. Are you shooting interlaced then converting to progressive with software, or are you using the camera's frame mode?
|
Wow, thats realy good. some questions:
1) was light loss (due to PS) a problem 2) Shot interaced or progessive (cine modes?) 3) What kind of colour correction was used/ filters 4) What was done in post and was done during the shot. Thanks Anhar |
camera frame mode
hi sean,
i use the camrera frame mode and the color correction on the DaVinci. best regards christopher häring |
Frame mode?
Can you explain further? Does anyone know if its possible to rent a setup like this in London, UK? |
Hi Chris!
Again a very good looking clip! :-) However I noticed that the colors on this one were not as saturated or high contrast as in the "Emanuela" video. But I reckon this was made with the intension of hm sort of emulating that 80s TV series kind a look?! And on some outdoor sky shots - especially with the heli against the sun - the sky is quite blown out... was this intended? And one more question: the underwater shots! Did you do them using only the FX1 (or Z1?!) without the Mini35 in some underwater housing for the cam.. afaik there is nothing "standard" that would allow to use something like the FX1 + the Mini35 underwater.. or is there?! ;) Thanks!!! Cheers, -Sören |

I'm working the French Open out here in Paris for ESPN and while getting ready in my hotel room this morning I had MTV France on and sure enough, this video was playing. Looked FANTASTIC!!!
Here's a working link to the video BTW: http://www.hmanvisions.com/clips_2005_1.html |
