looks AMAZING

man, this is unreal...

great stuff!

Wunderbar!

Christopher C. Murphy January 27th, 2005 06:48 AM

Holy Crap.

Man, that's good looking footage. That's with the FX1? Geez, I can't wait to get my Z1!

Kevin Dooley January 27th, 2005 07:28 AM

This question has nothing to do with the FX/Z1, but...what is the name of the artist and the name of the song used in that video?

Dave Elston January 27th, 2005 07:55 AM

Hi Christopher,

Thats great work !
I hope you didn't get any sand in the gear from that meteorite strike ;0)

Can you share more details regarding your 'base' setup with the Mini P&S ?

Any Additional matte box/filters used ?

FX1-specific problems encountered/solved etc... ?

Were you using CF modes for this ?

Did you capture externally 'live' through component or just straight down on HDV tape ?

This was shot in HDV mode rather than DV, right ?

Are you able to post some full-res grabs from the original footage ?

Please keep us posted with any more footage like this !

Thanks,
Dave

Jeff Patnaude January 27th, 2005 08:40 AM

My spelling isn't great , but.

SER GOOT!
I had the post people rocking out to this video ( wass viewing from the audio suite). Love the video and the music. Who is the band, any translation for us
german-ignorant Americans? Website for the artist?

The video looked like film, and the producer watching over my shoulder (film producer at that) was amazed.

APPLAUSE.....

Christopher Haering January 27th, 2005 10:16 AM

Shannon Rawls January 27th, 2005 11:53 AM

GREAT VIDEO!!!!!

It's about time we got some footage other then flowers, birds on a fence and cars passing by. *smile*

I am assume your camera was the FX1E version.

Did you use CF25 mode or 50i mode in HDV?

Any filters?

Carlos E. Martinez January 27th, 2005 01:31 PM

Is there a better resolution version of the video?

Carlos

Eric Gorski January 27th, 2005 02:19 PM

more info please!!
camera settings.. lighting setups.. etc.
amazing..

how about some high res stills?

Christopher C. Murphy January 27th, 2005 02:41 PM

Yeah, I'd like to see the higher res version!

Zack Birlew January 27th, 2005 03:23 PM

Well, shite that's good looking! I was considering waiting the Sony FX1/Z1 out for Panasonic's next camera (DVX100B or whatever, SD or not), but now I'm tempted to run down to the Sony store at the Forum Shops in Ceasar's Palace and buy the FX1 right now, or at least preorder a Z1! =)

Steven White January 27th, 2005 04:51 PM

Beautiful!

Was this shot 1080i or DV? (or any Cineframe mode)

-Steve

Nate Weaver January 27th, 2005 06:33 PM

Looks tremendous.

Remember guys that this was shot by an experienced DP, and then worked over by a colorist on what appears to be tools more sophisticated than say, the 3-Way color corrector in FCP.

But it's definitely evidence of what's possible...I wish people on the net would see this camera for what it CAN do, rather than picking it apart with the numbers.

I'll have stills/footage of the music vid I shot this week soon.

Steev Dinkins January 27th, 2005 07:03 PM

Hi, your work with the sony and the P+S is stellar. I'm assuming you used a PAL version of the camera, since the final output is 25fps.

My main question is what did you do about the interlaced format? Did you deinterlace to go progressive on it? If so, what did you use for that process? Or did you stay with interlaced the whole way, or use the Cineframe mode?

Again, awesome work.

:) I like.

Jack McCann January 28th, 2005 01:43 AM

Hi Christopher,

What did you do to get the vignette look in most of the shots? Was that in-camera or done in post?

Thanks, great looking footage by the way.

Harris Ueng January 28th, 2005 01:56 AM

Beautiful work! Catchy, toe-tappin' tune to boot. Nice rhythmic editing that goes well with the music. Esp. like the shots of the grinning bus driver. Definitely ups the humor of the piece.

Seriously, beautiful footage with a cam that's supposed to be for "prosumers". :-) Truly shows that it's the talent behind the camera with the right tools in hand and not just the camera itself.

Thanks for sharing!

Can I get a better quality version? Where?

From what I see I can mostly judge framing and editing, but the HDV quality seems lost in the very low resolution version.

I have tried with Media Player and Quicktime and it looks the same, and it's set for high resolution.

Jeff Patnaude January 28th, 2005 08:27 AM

Higher rez would be great, but I want to know where I can get the CD?

Chris Hurd January 28th, 2005 09:00 AM

As for myself, I'd like to see some production stills showing the FX1 / Mini35 setup on location.

Shannon Rawls January 28th, 2005 04:36 PM

I am now questioning if this is even the FX1.

On 3 different boards people are asking all kindsa questions...mainly the same ones.

Not one question has been answered.

Just posted the video, and left....

I'm not as excited as I was anynmore. As of now, for all I know, this was shot on 35mm or HDCAM.

I was wondering that myself, im trying to refrain from speculation.

What other boards was this posted on?

Ivan Hurtado January 28th, 2005 06:39 PM

Yes, i was absolutely amazed at the beggining with this piece of art, but as nobody answered, im getting to the point of doubting its veracity.

If this footage is real, after post and everything, it means prosumers can get to the point of enjoy explaining what people is waching is in fact digital, and smile with their open mouths.

But i think this is another thing (I really hope Christopher corrects me). How many of us were waching it over and over tip-tapping as the song played? and how many of us asked who were the players? New old kind of publicity method maybe, kind of mouth to mouth...

But as im interested in getting the Z1 i will still be hoping its real thing, at least in my heart.

Anyway, it is a very well done video with nice music.

Andreas Fernbrant January 28th, 2005 07:09 PM

I think that one point is beeing overseen,
As someone else pointed out here before, this peice
was filmed by a experienced DP. Most probably he could
have gotten almost the same results from a XL2 or DVX100.
The "resolution" factor is not the issue here. Colorcontrol,
correct exposure and the right frameing are a much bigger
issue. Most likely the peice was colorcorrected by a pro
too. Also remember that he has equipment for over twice
the price of the camera infront of his lens makeing this possible.

I don't have any doubts about getting results like this with
the FX1.

Jed Williamson January 28th, 2005 08:04 PM

If you go to the main page of the website it says he is in buenos aires from 1.28 to 2.17

Eric Gorski January 29th, 2005 03:11 AM

its legit.. he's using a mini35 image converter and probably using some lenses that cost 3 times as much as the camera.

Ivan Hurtado January 29th, 2005 09:52 AM

Ok, lets say its legit. I´m sorry i didn´t read about his trip. My apologizes. But it´s so well done!

Will it be 50i-60i? no doubt if they used so big bunch of equip they wouldn´t try the cineframe thing. Wich should be better to de-interlace, looking for quality results?

No idea of wich editor and plug-ins used. My imagination is absolutely dry at the moment. Its the "not believe till you see it" problem. Sure it´s over the top machinery and a good pro team working around to make the FX1look so impressive.

How can we get so far so quickly with technology? It looks like in a couple of years everything will be about the talent and knowledge of the people you are working with, and not about the latest techy thing (that´s my hope). In fact, it looks like this now, but not as evident as the moment we will have true 24p HD(v) in hands. Then teams will forget about perfect film look and worry about other productions needs.

I wish the best for the cameras to come.

Chris Hurd January 29th, 2005 10:23 AM

I'm pretty sure it's legitimate -- no real reason to doubt it -- besides, P+S Technik would know for sure, since they would keep a close eye on where their first units go, and to whom, for marketing purposes. That's why I was asking about some productions stills, there's bound to be some that were taken.

Hayden Rivers January 31st, 2005 01:19 AM

Not to throw my gasoline on the conspiracy fire, but his alias is Christopher Haering but he signed it 'christopher häring' I don't know about you but I don't mispell my name.

Ivan Hurtado January 31st, 2005 03:34 AM

Hayden nice conspiracy!

This might be because of the name register. My name and surname has some (´) attached on it, but when i tried to put complete spell, the machine didn´t let me register because it considered these symbols like alias things.

He probably looked for the most similar vowels sounds to his surname.

I´ve seen the Nate Weaver video and it looks great too, so the point must be that being filmed (recorded for the pourists) on a higer def and then downconverted in resolution (i hope im not fitting my feet in mouth very much with what i´m saying (still learning)), you get faboulous quality anyway to do what you want (i.e. blow up to film or do slo-mo tricks).

One step beyond...

Chris Hurd January 31st, 2005 07:48 AM

<< his alias is Christopher Haering but he signed it 'christopher häring' >>

That's easily forgiveable, in my opinion. We're known as an American board, despite the fact that I've intended for it to be international in appeal (but limited to the English language for practical reasons). Most Germans I have ever known, have correctly assumed that a casual American wouldn't know what an umlaut is. So they'll spell their name with an "ae" or an "oe" sometimes, and use an umlaut other times.

But this is completely off-topic now, so please disregard.

;-)

Michael Althaus February 18th, 2005 08:44 AM

It's not miss spelled. In german you can write ae instead of ä.

Evan Estay February 23rd, 2005 05:28 AM

link no longer works, help!

Rabi Syid March 3rd, 2005 04:52 PM

Hey the link doesn't work anymore.

Soeren Mueller March 4th, 2005 04:34 AM

Hi!

Only to clear things up a little - I guess the original post is absolutely real as I guess no one besides Christopher Haering himself could new the link to the video. ;-)
Furthermore "Fettes Brot" is a very well known band here in germany and the whole thing is absolutely not no-budget - as posted before by others thats one part of why it looks so good. It was professionally CCed/cut etc.pp. ... and personally I would say that they could have achieved the same with a DVX100A or XL2! I'm really wondering why they chose a HDV cam in the first place as HD is still not really getting off the ground here in germany and there are almost no distribution channels at all where you could watch something like this promo in more than SD quality! (of course you can argue about the better picture because of 1080i -> SD downconversion in post... however there were many examples/experiences posted on the web already showing that the benefit isn't that big)

Btw the vid was produced by a production company called Big Fish... http://www.bigfish.de/
If you have a look you'll see that they work with directors like Philipp Stölzl for example who directed one (or more) videos for Evanescence and others. So this is not really no budget indie style film/video making we're talking about here. :-)
