I also got this problem today. All of a sudden the viewfinder of my Z5 has stopped working. haven't got a 3 year guarantee but it's unusual I think for such a new camera to have this problem. I guess I have to take to Sony service here and hope that they will be able to repair soon as I have a job coming up in 4 weeks time.

You're sure VF POWERMODE is set to ON? If it's on AUTO, the VF only works if the LCD is closed or in mirror mode. I know it's been mentioned before in this thread, but sometimes people don't read from the beginning....

Adam

The VF POWERMODE has always been set on AUTO, that means when you close the LCD then the VF goes ON. In any case I have tried to put it on ON as you said but still there is a problem. but as I see here others also have this problem, maybe SONY should look into it.

View finder fault

Sorry to hear about al these problems with the viewfinder. My technician here said that the ribbon cable connecting the viewfinder to camera at the pivot joint is badly designed and vulnerable to wear and also added that it is different to the cable in the Z1. He finally used an old one from a PD170 to fix mine and it's been fine ever since.

I had to take my camera to a Sony dealer and they repair it, they charge around $300. It was the ribbon cable.

Well as I said since I had a silver Sony support for 2 years, I have contacted Prime support SONY Europe and they have sent me, by courier (at their expense) a packing box where I have put my Z5 inside and send it back to them. I did this on Monday 25th. Today UPS couriers phoned me that my camera is back and at the same time I got an email from Sony Prime Support that my Z5 has been repaired and that someone will contact me next week to see that everything is OK.and all these for free.
Now this is what I call service. Well done SONY!!! !

Just to let you know that the part they replaced costs $25 so the rest went for labour costs. Ofcourse this doesn't mean that you can do it yourself (I wish I could) let the experts handle repairs.
Here is the culprit:
