Dont know about a firmware update but I have had my Z7 for 5 months now and the autofocus is fine, I did the backplane set-up and turned off macro but I feel that as the camera has been used it is better now than when new and I dont notice any searching even in low light.

Have a look t some of the clips on my pub web site and you will see some very low light shot stuff in the pub and there is no searching at all:www.theblackhorsebar.co.uk

Anthony i have had my camera for 1 day and the first thing i did was which the auto button to manual and click the focus ring back so it's in full manual mode you dont need to use it come on you can do it.

It all depends on what you shoot

The Z7 is perfect for me because it uses tapes and CF.

Easy. Tape & Loooow Cost CF media + 100% back up going on at all times. WOW! Plus the MRU serves other cameras . . heck, I even use it on my DVX100B :o)

Oh and the rolling shutter that plagues the EX1 CMOS . . not there in the Z7 unless you put the strobe or flash right up in the lens pratically and even then not 30 to 70 frames of wobbling destruction . . only 7 total AND hard to identify in regular play from just a pure flash.

Thank you Sony for making this camera. I always liked Sony but had been a loyal fan of Panasonic with DVX100B and HVX200A but now it's the Z7U - AND - ME :o)
