Problems with Final Cut Pro's Log and Transfer tool

Hi All

I've done a simple summary of these (serious) issues, and presented a few workarounds, on my blog. Anyone planning to shoot on the NXCAM and use FCP should read it.

Sony at NAB and their response...

Hi, Adam...

I met with Juan Martinez of Sony at NAB on Monday to discuss the NX5U issues with FCP. They made it very clear to me that as they see it, this is Apple's issue...and Apple will most likely need to release a patch to Log and Transfer.

I sense from their response that the problem is where this falls in Apple's "to do" list. Since the NX5U has a small user base for the moment, Apple will probably only deal with it after repeated knocks on their door. My hunch is that it will take almost half a year to get this recognized by Apple and then have them respond to it.

One alternate suggestion offered up was to use Cineform and it's wavelet-based codec. Another might be to use MPEG Streamclip to convert to Pro Res.

And yes, like you and many others, I wish Apple and Sony had tested out the AVCHD workflow for Final Cut Pro users ahead of time so these issued could have been avoided.

Hi John

I'm not enough of a boffin to know exactly what a wavelet-based codec is, and don't have the time right now to figure it out (shooting hours and hours every day) but Juan suggested Cineform to me too. It seems to cost $150, tho -- why should we have to be paying extra to make stuff work like they said it would? urgh!

Anyway, am still loving the images coming out of my NXCAM -- not quite up there with EX stuff in terms of slickness, but they have more character/a little grain, which I like. There are some dumb design decisions on the cam and some missing features that could easily be fixed with a firmware update, so here's hoping that in 6 months we'll have FCP and the NX5's software/firmware fixed! The basics are all there -- they just need tweaking!
