Don't suppose anyone has asked/heard from Sony regarding firmware upgrades to make this a world cam?

I heard back from Sony Canada and they say there are no plans to offer this option. Haven't heard back from Sony USA yet ...

Also, might be a stupid question but what advantages does 1080 50/60p offer if footage is for EU broadcast (1080 50i)?

What if one walked into a Sony service center and asked to have that capability added to one's camcorder?
