Sony 1.7X extender

Hi to you all,
I bought the sony 1.7x extender because the Century 2.0X was not available for my trip to Alaska in July.
After seing the videos with the extender I am not happy with the results. They seem to be soft and without contrast.
I notice this especially when shooting with back lighting, like birds in a tree where the sky is behind the subject.
I used to have a Canon D30 and did not have this problem especially when filling the frame with the subject, but with the VX2000 and the extender my pictures are definately not good even when filling zooming in on the subject.
Has anyone had experience with these lens?

Kenko makes good ones. They have 3 lines: low-end, middle-end and high-end. The high-end are very good, for the money. And they even come with filter threads so that you can screw on a lens hood (or filter).
