Any guesses on a street price?

If this cam is only 30-45 days away, what do you think the initial street price will be?

Paul Ramsbottom October 10th, 2007 09:39 PM

I think the $7,499 price that B&H posted early-on but then promptly removed is probably it.

I noticed that B&H just added more information and that the camera will come with one 8GB card and not two, as had been rumored.

Steven Thomas October 10th, 2007 09:43 PM

I'm hearing it supposed to come with two cards if bought before the end of the year. At least this is what I'm hearing overseas.

Jiri Bakala October 10th, 2007 09:57 PM

The low US dollar is causing price adjustments, so B&H are possibly recalculating their price or removing the second SxS card to adjust to the low exchange rate of the USD.

Serena Steuart October 11th, 2007 12:48 AM

The introductory offer here is A$9490 (without tax) with smaller battery and two 8GB cards. I suspect the 2 card offer is pre-release, but I've no knowledge of such a limit. That would make the price US$8500 but your larger market will probably get the price lower. The camera is made in Japan, so your exchange rate against Yen is probably the thing to watch.

Paul Ramsbottom October 11th, 2007 01:12 AM

Hi Serena,

Yea, even with exchange rates, US pricing is always favorable to AUS, all my family lives there (my Aunt lives in Port Melbourne no less) and they are always complaining.

i'm betting the $7,499 Us price will hold firm, if only because there has been some much us marketing/speculation at the US$7K price point.

Here's a copy and paste from the B&H [pre] listing

• Lens Hood
• Large Eye Cup
• IR Remote Controller
• USB Cable
• A/V Connecting Cable
• Component Video Cable
• Shoulder Strap
• Operation Manual
• XDCAM EX Clip Browsing Software
• SxS Device Driver Software
• SBP-8 SxS Pro Memory Card
• BP-U30 Battery
• BC-U1 Charger
• 1-Year Limited Warranty

So... just one card, which sucks but only well.

A 1 year warranty is better than their HDV models (big considearation as Sony has a madatory $500 fee for anything these days.

Vaughan Wood October 11th, 2007 01:40 AM

"Available until December 31st 2007, or until stocks run out, all PMW-EX1 XDCAM EX Camcorders will ship in Australia with an extra 8GB SxS PRO™ card - this is in addition to the 8GB SxS PRO™ card supplied as standard".

This is a quote from videoguys.com.au, so it is a limited offer.

Just remember for those doing events, weddings etc, that the camera will only do 2 hours on the supplied battery, and 4 hours on the optional larger battery so you're going to need a few of those (expensive) beasts.

Vaughan

I guess you could plug into DC and lug a brick. Didn't check the DC-in voltage. Battery max is 16.4, min 14.4, or maybe that is the DC-in.

B&H Price

Just called today to buy some stuff. Asked about the EX and the sales guy knew a good amount about the cam. I asked what it may retail for and if I could pre-order.

He said 6-7K with 1 8gig card and the 8 gig cards would be "around" $200.

I said I was thinking around closer to 8 but he said no.

I hope this is the case.

I just spoke to my sales guy and he didn't know about the price, but said he didn't expect the unit before Christmas. Ugh! I thought this thing was supposed to come out next month! I don't see how the 8gig cards could sell for $200, though... they list for $500 according to Sony.

Mike Williams October 11th, 2007 06:40 PM

Hmmm

He did say late November. Maybe he was thinking the lower end cards and not the Sony "sanctioned" one. Not sure really. I am going to keep creating my own reality and visualize $6500 and $200 per card...

:)

I'm with Mike on this one. Keep thinking $6500 !

Mike Williams October 11th, 2007 08:39 PM

New Mantra?

OK,

How about some a new community Mantra? :)

oohhhmmmmmmmmmm ......... sitxy five hundred ........... ohhhmmmmm

and repeat

:)

Travis Binkle October 12th, 2007 12:07 AM

Mike, if what he told you hold true, you just made my Christmas!

6500 might be the deal breaker for me. I've been in Canon's camp since the L1/2 Pro Hi8 days. But at that price with what you'd get, Sony is going to be completive even with the XH-A1 (if you add everything you'd need to make it a similar setup given I'm tapeless now and wont switch back.)

PMW-EX1: ?$6500?
Comes with a real High Def LCD
Has buit in tapeless recording
1/2" sensors with a near pro lens for greater DOF
total: (and we're praying) $6500

vs.

XH-A1: $3500
FSC for tapless: 60GB $1250
External Monitor for critical focus work: ikan: $750+noga arm: $100
Add the 35mm adaptor of your choice + any lenses: $1000 and up
total: $6600 and up, depending on the lenses for a basic M2 kit.

Yes I would reconsider everything if the PMW-EX1 came out at $6500
I think a lot of people would. Do I think it will happen? I hope so. I sadly couldn't afford it if it hits the streets at $7500-$8000. I mean, I have to draw a line somewhere. Right?

Lets start a petition for that line to be $6500

Who's with me?

Paul Ramsbottom October 12th, 2007 12:31 AM

I bet you dollars to doughnuts it's going to be $7,499 with one 8GB and those lucky folks with connections will be taking delivery right before Thanksgiving.

That'll be right after the 100+ units that CNN apparently has on order.

Stu Holmes October 12th, 2007 02:56 PM

I'll pitch in with my guesstimate that it will be likely 6500-6999USD at somewhere like the aforementioned NYC store.

David Parks October 12th, 2007 03:07 PM

With the included 8Gig card plus a 16Gig card, I've been told by my local dealer to budget around $8,300.00. I was also told that I probably could place an order in mid to late November and take delivery in early to mid December or certainly by the end of the year. I might wait until after the first of the year to see what bugs need to be worked if any. But unless there is some overarching bug problems with the platform, I'm saving up to buy one.

Cheers.

Jeroen Wolf October 13th, 2007 04:34 AM

So called special offer: here in Holland 5200 ex VAT including 2 8 GB cards untill december. That's 7,367.58 USD

But what will happen after December...? ;)

Mike Williams October 13th, 2007 07:21 PM

oooohhhhmmmm

The BH guy was in the ball park with 6-7. I'm thinking the 8 gig card might do the trick if there isn't a quick unload alternative on location.

That 1K difference will hurt due to the fact that we will need to buy all new batteries and flash cards. I hope they realize that they will be selling a bnch of other stuff to us and "kind of" set the hook with a lower price on the unit.

ooohhhmmmm.

:)

Daniel Weber October 18th, 2007 06:55 PM

I talked to several Sony reps at a Pro Show near Wash DC today.

One of them told me that we would be "very happy" with the price. This was after I asked her about the $8K list price.

They are saying mid November to ship, but the major networks will get the first batch of cameras. I said something about CNN getting the first 100 and she laughed and said "it's a lot more than that".

Also the $3K or so priced portable reader deck will have a firmware upgrade in a few months that will make it about to record to XDCAM HD discs.

Good discussions regarding workflow and the like.

B&H will sell the EX1 for $6449!! Told you the first number would be a 6....
:-)

Travis Binkle October 18th, 2007 11:44 PM

At $6449 I think they wont be able to keep up with production demands.

It also seems Sony have their sites firmly planted on taking some of the HVX market share.

Just looked but either you were mistaken or they just raised the price by $500...

B&H Price

Just got this product update from B&H...

Steven Thomas October 19th, 2007 08:00 AM

Not bad though.
So the EX will sell for $7K,
Sounds better than the original $8K, $6.5K would of been nice.

Well, this ends that mystery.

They keep changing their price on me.... :-(

Although, they did at an earlier date have an even higher price on it....so it COULD change again.....

Boyd Ostroff October 19th, 2007 12:53 PM

Everyone: I understand how enthusiastic you are about getting a great deal on an EX. But please don't recommend non-sponsor vendors at DVinfo. Please read Chris' post here for further clarification of our policy: http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/showpost....79&postcount=7

Thanks for your understanding.

(In best possible Homer Simpson voice) "Mmmm... donuts... rawwrrrawwwrrr."

That'll be $500 worth of bear claws, Paul.

Evan Donn October 19th, 2007 02:35 PM

So the $6999 price includes 1 8gig card, but Abel has a note about getting a second free card:

Quote:

One 8GB SxS ExpressCard media is included in the PMW-EX1 carton box at no additional charge from Sony. A second 8GB SxS ExpressCard media will be sent, at no additional charge, to end users who purchase PMW-EX1 from an authorized XL Reseller, complete an online survey, opt in and submit other requested information at www.sony.com/xdcamex/customer. Offer good until March 26, 2008.
The link goes to a 404 though, so no details... but it sounds like it'll be a rebate type of thing - buy the camera, take the survey, agree to be spammed by sony, and they send you the card. Reminds me of the 5 free HDV Master tapes offer they were running a while ago - anyone participate in that? How long did it take to get the tapes?

It seems like with a lot of these rebate-type things the turnaround can be months, so it might be a while before we get the second card... for most of the shooting I do I think 2 8gig cards would suffice, but one would probably be a stretch.

EDIT: also - anyone know what an "authorized XL Reseller" is? Does that just mean an authorized reseller, or is "XL" some special designation that not all resellers qualify for?

Paul Ramsbottom October 19th, 2007 02:59 PM

arrgghhhh

Knew someone would call me on that, eating humble (doughnut) pie.

But heck, that's a nice thing to be wrong about :)

I got my order-in at 9.22am, my contact tells me I am in the top 15, off to Mnt. Everest on 11/17 - hoping I will have it in my hands by then.

Seen some TBA listings for batteries, no mention of cards or the WA adapter yet.

Chris Hurd October 19th, 2007 03:24 PM

Everest?! Hoping you'll give us a full report on that expedition, Paul!

Paul Cronin October 19th, 2007 05:16 PM

Order in today with one 8gb card, BPU 60 (6hr) battery, B+W glass, .8 Sony Wide Angle.

David Heath October 19th, 2007 05:27 PM

Be very interesting to see what the street price of the SxS cards settles down at. I think there was some disappointment at initial reports that they would be almost as much as P2 - maybe we're in for some good news here as well?

Anybody heard anything?

I never got mine even after submitting the paperwork 3 times and calling several times. I'm still not a happy camper over that.

Steven Thomas October 19th, 2007 11:36 PM

I can't imagine were in for the P2 pricing, especially since Sony is throwing in a 8GB and offering another 8GB free before 03/08. I surely don't recall the HVX200 rolling out like this.

Mike Williams October 20th, 2007 08:50 PM

Card and Battery?

What about the cost of the batteries and cards? Anyone know have ideas on the street price?

Mike

Paul Ramsbottom October 20th, 2007 09:30 PM

B&H have batteries listed for $117 and $234 (and the .8 WAA for $450).

Hey Paul, where is the link for the WA lens?

what is the lens size,..82mm?

Paul Ramsbottom October 21st, 2007 09:13 PM

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...E_ADAPTER.html

No info.

Searching on just PMW (rather than PMW-EX1 brings up more stuff)

$450, phewwwww, better deliver the goods! That's over 15% of the cost of the camera.

Curous to know how the CAC works.

Daniel Boswell October 21st, 2007 09:20 PM

If its anything like the Sony WA for the V1, I will be saving my money and waiting on Century Optics.

So does anyone know the Lens size of this cam???

I just bought a Letus Extreme and want to know if I need a step up or step down ring.
