Gates probably makes the best housings for any camera.

It would be my first choice, if I had the budget.

There's also the Equinox HD10 for around half the money.

It'd be nice to have if it didn't cost more than the camera....

The Gates housing for the EX1 is $6860.00. We had the prototype here for a couple days, it is very impressive.

I will have some more photos of it uploaded today.

Looks more like $7700.00 when you put the cheapest port and diopter in place...

I see in the list that there is an EWA Marine bag for the EX1. I am planning to take an EX1 on a river trip. Has anyone used it? I am just wondering if you can flip out the LCD screen with it. If not, it's got to be hard to frame shots by looking into the viewfinder through the plastic membrane. Also, I am wondering how easy it is to turn the camera on and off as the switch is pretty slippery.

Gates

Hello all,
Just returned from the Galapagos. We had a prototype Gates for the EX1. It did a great job. The super wide port was not available at the time of our departure. I'm told it will soon be.
My issues are with the Sony switches. Their low profile (Power, ND, and others) require a soft touch when making changes from the mechanical thru hull controls.
I own and use many types of UW housings. There is a real comfort with the Gates mechanical control system. Yes this housing is not cheap, but who wants cheap when you are sealing up a 6500$ camera. The EX1 makes incredible images at a great price point. Gates has to develop housings for cameras at varying price points, but everyone has to remain dry, and operate in difficult situations.
Gates also installed a vacuum system which one would find on a Pace, Hydroflex or other high end housing. This is a must for me.
The EX with a fat battery and two 16 gig cards, meant I did not have to open the unit till we returned from our dives. Sealed it in the morning, and opened it when done.

In da bag

I too would like to know about the bag. Has anyone used it?

Ray Bell June 8th, 2008 09:13 AM

Dennis, Could you post some footage from the trip...

Thanks...

At this time, the Underwater setup choices, at least with the new Sony cams at this price range, seems to be the EX1 vs the Z7.

The EX1 being supported by Gates and the Z7 being supported by Amphibico.

The cam prices are pretty much the same price... the housing prices are very different...
