Finally solved it (without knowing how I did it)
I had turned the camera on and off and even taken the battery off as well with no success.
Then I put the camera in Media mode and back to camera mode and voila; it worked, both the wheel and the joystick.
So the camera must have "locked up" or something is my only guess
