EX1R Shotgun Mic Holder Failed

I broke the shotgun mic holder on my EX1R. I found that the plastic used to affix the holder isn't particularly robust. The dealer I purchased it from has since gone out of business. Does anyone have a good source on where to go for parts on Sony EX cameras in the states?
Thanks,
Dan

It is highly recommended to just place a shoe mount in it's place. Those are in plentiful supply at B&H.

Re: EX1R Shotgun Mic Holder Failed

Hi Daniel,

Since the day the mic-holder of my EX1R broke for the first time I just secured it with a piece of tape (picture enclosed). I'm just not willing to spend some $100 on a stupid piece of plastic and have had no issues since.

Re: EX1R Shotgun Mic Holder Failed

Hello,

Don't worry, the market has better solutions.
I just received one J-Rod Super Strong Twin Mount directly from thejrodstore.com
(postal cost is far cheaper than B&H's or Adorama's)

The product looks-works very fine, I took the original SONY off because it is quite complicated to remove and put back the mic all the time into the original holder ( I have a smaller bag for the camera so mic has to be taken done before closing the bag)

That J-Rod is great too especially if you use some wireless set, but you also need some mic holder for the shotgun, I'm using Rode's for the NGT-3 .

Re: EX1R Shotgun Mic Holder Failed

Are there some problems with JRod and Ex1R?

No, nothing so far, ( I have it for few weeks only)
I have managed to fit it fine, it comes with two screws which fits fine into the holes for the original holder.

Re: EX1R Shotgun Mic Holder Failed

I looked at J-rod and DM Accessory solutions. I ended up getting the DM Accessories product and am please with it. It comes with a nice instruction sheet with photos and replacement screws. It's also made in the USA if that matters to you.

As for your question, this post addresses the EX1R issue. Filing off the registration pins is a non-starter for me. YMMV:

Re: EX1R Shotgun Mic Holder Failed

Thank you for all the great suggestions.

With the mic holder off I've actually found the EX1R a little easier to use on the tripod. Over the years I've gotten used to ENG type cameras with the lens zoom control out in front of camera body. I hold the tripod handle with my right hand and then bring my left over the lens but under the viewfinder and use the zoom rocker.

This is hard to do with the EX1R since the rocker is located on the right center of the camera. With the mic holder off, and the monitor flipped out, I can do a better job putting my hand over the camera and bracing on the surface where the mic holder was.

Re: EX1R Shotgun Mic Holder Failed

I have had the EX1R mic holder break twice, once in an overhead bin on bumpy flight, and once when a helpfully producer picked the cam up by the shotgun mic.

Both times I just epoxied the plastic parts back together carefully. The last repair was almost 2years ago, so this works fine.

I have been told that Sony designed the holder to break rather than having the whole front of the handle break, that would be very expensive to fix. I have seen an EX1 where this happened, not pretty.
