PXW-X180 Live streaming

Just finished configuring my X180 for live transmitting and on air broadcast via my stations Teradek receiver. It was a PITA to get the live settings and HotSpot information for network connection INTO the camera. Unlike out JVC HM650's, this Sony requires you to access the camera via a WEB BROWSER after WPS'ing into a WiFi network that the computer is attached to as well. Says you can do this through Play Memories, but my Play memories kept crashing, and disconnecting, hopeless.

Anyway, gives 3 preset configurations, enter web address, then the port, set your bit rate and resolution. Once the presets are in the camera, you can toggle through them as easily as setting a new gain value to a switch, do not have to turn live streaming off to switch presets. All my presets o to the same Teradek, I just lower the resolution and bitrate from higher to lower from PRE1down to PRE3.

I can do low res with an iffy HotSpot connection, for 3Mbps 720p, have to hang my phone on the shotgun mic cable for signal integrity. Plugged a Verizon modem into the port, operated the same, handy, self contained, I like it. Sony put their USB network port in a better spot than JVC, who put theirs on the lower back of the unit, awkward. The Sony lets you stick the modem in sticking straight up on the right rear of the camera.

Re: PXW-X180 Live streaming

Have a ULM290 Verizon modem sticking out of my USB slot, all is well for now. Camera really loves 480x270 at 0.5Mbps, seems to be able to stream that 100% in adverse conditions with a lot of movement. Time from power switch ON to live picture on air is roughly 1 minute 30 seconds. Unfortunately, this camera only works with OBSOLETE n longer manufactured Verizon 700MHz LTE modems, and not any of the current XLTE 700/1900MHz versions, a disappointment as the new modems in my area do up to 30Mbps+ upload speeds.

The WiFi connectivity is turning out to be pretty useless. There is no way to figure out what is going on with the WiFI if you get a red X, without 15 minutes of free time, a WiFi and a PC etc, PITA. The modem connects itself, so it bypasses that issue. If you are a stringer wanting to offer some live feeds, just buy a Teradek type receiver, and setup some sort of home server to send out a Flash video stream over html, then have your clients simply click a link you send them. :-)
