Doug, I'd be interested to know why you would mount the Zacuto EVF at the rear of the F3, right above the Sony VF.

That's what I would have thought, too, but when I tried the VF further forward and it didn't fee right to me. It put me too close to the follow-focus unit with such a short lens. The rear position just feels more comfortable to me right now, but I don't know if that will be the final location or not.

I guess the photo doesn't show it, but the VF is NOT actually directly behind the camera, it is to the left of the body. This gives me approximately the same kind of feel operating the camera as where I would stand with my F800. This distance from my eye to my left hand would be about the same on either camera.

I think the point here is that Doug is using the EVF primarily as a tripod mount EVF, not particularly in a hand-held config (which one would presumably position differently.) Another analogy would be that the EVF is positioned about where the eyecup would be when using a film camera with the normal extension eyepiece used by most operators when ot a tripod. It all depends what you're used to...

Yup, that's right. Thanks for the clarification.

And that's been my experience as well.

Doug,
Is the Z Finder the same as the Z Finder for the 5D?

Doug,
Just checked the Z site
"The Zacuto EVF is a 3.2” high resolution monitor that is used in conjunction with all the Z-Finder models. "

Dennis, I'm glad you figured it out because I wouldn't have known the answer.

I wish Redrock would get their EVF out the door.

Hey, I got the Hoodman now and I have to disagree. For me it works very good, especially with an articulating arm holding it in place additonally. But I also have to say I configured my Rig to be back heavy.

Hi Matthias,

What brand is the short atculate arm you are using to support it? Looks good.

Thierry.

Its a Cineroid. But the exact same arm gets branded for other companys also. It was pretty cheap, you get the exact same one from Ikan for example. The quality is really good and it locks down tight.

Re: FYI:Case for the Zacuto EVF Pro

Since its arrival, I have been perplexed by the accompanying soft case. It seems that the EVF has to be disassembled in order for part of it to fit within the case, the remainder goes where?
A call to Zacuto in search of a carry case for the entire unit proved fruitless. However, a search through my equipment closet revealed an unoccupied Cannon telephoto lens case (200mm)—problem solved. The entire assembled EVF fits inside with room to spare. And a small piece of cut foam placed beneath the EVF allows the charger to sit inside the case beneath the EVF. When I have a moment I will take a photo and post it.

Re: External EVF vs monitor?

I have used both the Zacuto EVF and the TVLogic. The quality of the Zacuto's screen does not seem very good whereas the TVLogic is amazing. Without peaking, neither is good enough for very accurate focusing, mainly due to their small size. When using the TVLogic, I found it easy enough to get accurate focus. However, for shoulder mount shooting, the Zacuto was better when I didn't have to walk and pull focus while the TVLogic was a little easier to walk around and pull focus (using a Zacuto FF). I used a Zacuto articulating arm to attach them, which I also have used with a PIX240.
