10D Lenses
I have recently been thinking about purchasing a Canon 10D. I've been using my old 35mm Rebel for a few years and am ready to give a good digital cam a try (the only digital I have is a compact that i use for spur of the moment shots). I have been looking around at lenses and was wondering if anyone knew of any good sites with thorough and unbiased lens reviews? Also, just out of curiosity, what lenses do some of you current 10D owners use?

PhotoZone features an extensive database of user-review ratings of lenses (and many other items).
For a general-purpose wide/medium zoom lens the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 USM L is probably at the top of its category in terms of performance. Jeff Donald recommended this lens to me as a good first-purchase last year. It was one of the best pieces of advice I've received. Yes, it's a bit pricey but it's a superb lens, particularly to start with. One matter that you should note is that the 10D has a crop factor of 1.6. That is, the effective focal length of lenses on the 10D will be 1.6 times the lens' nominal focal lengths. For example, the 24-70 becomes a 38.4-112mm.

Thanks for the link Ken. The lens you recommended is indeed expensive but I think I would be able to afford it. Jeff, for my rebel I have an EF 35-80mm f/4.0-5.6 and an EF 100-300mm f/4.5-5.6 USM. Obviously neither of these are exceptionally good lenses. That is why I was trying to assess how much money I need to come up with to be able to get the proper glass to do the 10D justice. Thanks for the quick responses.

Ken's suggestion is still my first choice. The 28-135mm IS lens is slower, but does have Image Stabilization. It is more reasonably prices as well. The optical performance is better than what you have, yet not in the same league as the 24-70mm L lens. If you don't mind used equipment the 28-70mm is another L lens in the same class.

Darrell
I owned the 28-70 that jeff referred to, but I was never happy with it. One day I dropped it...so now I have the 24-70. Its a noticeably better lens, and that extra 4mm on the wide end is much appreciated. If you're looking for something wider (and you probably will after the 1.6x multiplier gets to your lenses), I'm a big fan of the 17-40L f4.0 lens. It's cheap (as l-series lenses go) at $600, and it's a little slower than the 16-35 L2.8, but it is nicely crisp at the wide end of things...which very few lenses on the 10D can claim... Finally, the 70-200L zoom is one of the finest lenses I've ever owned in any format. Barry |

Darrell, I also have the EF 17-40mm f/4 L that Barry mentioned. It's everything he noted...an excellent value and less expensive than its "faster" brother L lens. In fact, last weekend I shot for two straight days with my 10D and the 17-40 lens. Here are some of the results.

Nice shots Ken. I will definitely be looking into (and hopefully purchasing) some of the lenses mentioned, particularly the EF 24-70mm f/2.8 USM L. Thanks for all of the replies... very helpful as usual.

There are two really great sites with Canon lens performance and reviews:
1-www.luminous-landscape.com 2-www outbackphoto.com the 28-135 IS is my primary lens. for wider angles I use the 17-40. the 70-200L is one of the best lenses made. |

I would recommend the 17-40---much cheaper, a bit slower but brilliant pics. REmember, the 1.6x factor of the 10D---.

Thanks again for all of the suggestions. I now have a pretty good idea of the lenses I will be purchasing. Now, I just have to convince myself to not think about the money and buy the camera already.
