which is better d40 or xti?

Neither one is more "professional" than the other. It's strictly a Ford vs. Chevy argument. You can grow into either one. The right one for you is the one which feels best in your hands -- by all means try before you buy, and pick the one you like. Then start shooting! Hope this helps,

Also, if you can afford to wait a little bit longer, next week is PMA.

I know the cameras you're considering are still new, so it's somewhat unlikely they'll be replaced this soon, however there are other cameras coming out that may spark more interest than what you're currently considering.

I generally don't advise people to wait when they already know what they want.
But when an event like PMA or NAB is just about to start, promising to showcase some new and advanced tools that may better serve your needs, I figure why not stretch the patience out a little more.
It may very well be worth it.
