Music in videos

I hope I can describe what I'm talking about clearly enough to get the right answer. If I am not filming, but have subscribers of a web site submit videos. But they have copyrighted music playing is these clips, and they are posted on a site that of course makes money. Am I liable for any copyright infrindgments?(sorry not sure of the spelling on that one haha) How exactly does that work? I've seen some video clips on sites where they are clearly using copyrighted music, and I highly doubt they paid for anything.

Consult an attorney specializing in media law and intellectual property rights. That's the only way you're going to get a usable answer. That is, in addition to anything Paul Tauger has to say here (and yes he is an attorney specializing in media law).

I can't give legal advice to non-clients. As a general rule, however, copying, distributing, publicly performing or preparing derivative works (as in syncing music to video) without permission of the copyright owner is a violation of copyright and constitutes infringement. The fact that it takes place on the internet doesn't change the analysis.

Hey Paul,
