Hi From Eastern Ontario Canada
Hi, I just joined a couple of weeks ago. This is a great site. I have been out of the business for the last 4 - 5 years and just getting back into my own production company. Before that I had worked in TV Broadcasting for 7 years. I hail from Brockville, Ontario Canada.
Anybody out there from Eastern Ontario? I am waiting on the arrival of my XL1s and I am in the process of purchasing the Pinnacle Pro-1 RTDV editing system. I have a couple of projects in the planning stage, which will deal with the history of railways in Ontario. I look forward to chatting with some of you. Dale C. Elliott |
Hi, I'm originaly from the Niagara region. I knew someone that lived in Brockville, but I can't remember his name. Dark hair, medium height, do you know him? :)
|
Welcome aboard Dale! Good to have you with us. You've got
yourself a sweet camera there! Probably waiting for it is killing you? :) heh... Anyways, see you around! |
I know you're going to enjoy your new XL1s and being able to work on what you want - when you want. Welcome aboard!
|
Thanks for the warm welcome. I just received my XL1s on Friday, and spent the weekend using it. Wow, what a nice machine.
Dale |
I can imagine Dale! I can remember that a couple of years back
(when I wasn't into video/movie production at all) I saw the XL1 in an ad or something and thought.... WOW. That looks amazing. I then thought wouldn't it be great to have such a piece of equipment. Now I own one. I bought mine almost a year ago on a evening in December and I was completely not on this planet for a week or something. Couldn't help but stare at it. Heh. Good luck with yours! |

|
Welcome, Dale!
My grandfather was an engineer on the Santa Fe for 40 years...and so I've had this fascination for trains and the railroad lifestyle my entire life. Please keep us posted. I'd love to see your footage when it's ready. See you on the boards. |
Just So I can introduce myself, I thought I'd reply to this message. I am in Ottawa. I expected to see a few more Eastern Ontarion posts here.

Patrick -->>> Sure! You can start your own introduction thread. You don't have to post in this one. Most people start a new thread. That why you don't see a lot of Ontario posts in this one alone. |
Welcome aboard Patrick, like Dylan said you can start your own. I had started this one when I first signed up.
I am from Brockville, I have not heard from too many from this neck of the woods. Dale |

Great so I see there are some locals(sorta) where did you get your XL1S?
|
I bought mine in Kingston.
|
Welcome Frank!
I'm in Barrie. I travel fairly extensively and maybe can help you find Canadian sources. |
Thanks Brian if you can find a standard body kit with Manual Servo 16X lense for under $6000 let me know.

When I was shopping areound and still undecided I got my best price on an XL1S at. Edcom have branches all over Ontario and prices seem to vary with just how hungry the salesman is when you call. Edcom Multimedia Products Inc. 350 Shirley Ave. Units 9 & 10 Kitchener, Ontario N2B 2E1 Telephone : (519)578-2260 |
I'm very surprised you got a good deal at Edcom. The Edcom her ein London deals primarily in Panasonic, I don't know what it's like elsewhere.
I think Edcom may deal with Vinten... |
newbe From canada
Hello all
First off i would like to say that this is the biggest forum Ive seen related to this great info I am very new too. I can really learn alot here. Im an artist from ontario canada, and have been wanting to do some short films for awhile now, I do some props, costumes and FX and have always loved film and the process from camera to editing all that fun stuff! some of my work that can be seen here: http://www.kre8tivearts.com/ I have just purchased a sony DCR VX2000 e I was told that the quality is better with PAL but dident realize that my NTSC monitors wouldent work and that there is a trasfering process also involed that Im tring to find out about more everyday If I should sell it and get a NTSC model. Another thing is my name is Pete Mander I wasent looking I quess when I typed it, Hopfully this can be changed? anyway hope to meet a few of you soon, and talk later. -Pete |
Welcome Pete! Where from Ontario? Kenoro? Ottawa? Niagra Falls? :-))
I used to live just outside of Dinorvic (probably not spelled right---it was a long time ago). |
Hey Pete!
I used to live in the Niagara region before I wised up and moved to Vancouver. :) |
Thanks!
Hmmmmm Vancouver?.....very odd you mention this...I have the vancouver sun and a few realstate adds saved in my favs for house searching..just need to get the wife more interested...she says it rains to much there..LOL never been there myself. but I do have many reasons to get out of this small little gargen city. -Pete |
It does rain alot.
On the other hand, I remember one sunny day this Febuary, I was washing my car in shorts and a t-shirt and got a phone call from my sister in Ottawa where it was -20. |
And don't forget our most lovely, "Wreck Beach."
|
I'm just outside of Ottawa - but I'm originally from the North of England, so I'm well aware of both PAL and NTSC, and have even gone to the bother of writing software to convert between them.
PAL is only really of use in Canada if you intend your video to end up on film - otherwise those extra 100 lines of resolution are more hassle than they're worth. I've had to get multi-standards gear for the most part so that I can keep working on my UK projects, and be able to test things like standards converters. But I decided to get an NTSC camera because of the compatability over here, and that I can experiment getting 24p rather than 25p, which altogether a greater challenge - but one I managed to crack! But my deck is the DSR-25, which is PAL and NTSC and very useful! Graeme |

You're producing for the Beeb?
Graeme |
the what? lost me here...LOL
|
I saw someone with a 24P today. I was taking pictures with my Nikon FM2T and he was videoing me taking pictures (with my Nikon FM2T). This was at Kits Beach (no, not Wreck Beach) late afternoon.
2 reasons: * if you already have pal gear, including PAL TV * sending footage to your loved ones in PALsville - why convert? Just shoot PAL. :-)) |

Graeme -->>> BBC? Frank, did you take a picture of the guy taking a video of you while you were taking a picture of him videoing you? |
No. I only had my 50mm on. The 135 would have worked. The guy looked familar. I think I saw him at Leo's once, or somewhere.
|
hmmmm
Well ....this is turning out to be quite the welcome thread..LOL
wayyyyy to much info on this forum, think My head is gonna pop!. now I whant to get a better camera. man oh man! |

The 3 biggest secrets to shoot good video are: * get a decent tripod * don't shoot into your main light source. * use the KISS method: "keep it simple stupid." |
Hi Pete, welcome aboard. What part of Ontario are you from? I am in Brockville along the St. Lawrence River south of Ottawa.

The unusual intro. muahahah!
Hi! Hello! and Greetings!
I'm Kaleem Maxwell, from Mississauga, Ontario, Canada (just west of Toronto). I am currently a 4th year university student studying multimedia. Right now I run a media endevour, K-Max Media Entertainment which covers niche shows like fandom events, bodybuilding shows and more. I've recently started video services and hope to do well. My site's URL is: www.kmaxmedia.com My first camera was a JVC GR-DVA1 (yes, a DV camera with NO firewire... ugh) but I am now a proud owner of a Canon GL2... so now I can rule the screens muahahah! I use a pinnacle DV500 card with Premiere 6.5. Also had experience in doing TV studio work and after effects. Well, nice to meet everyone and hope to get to know some of you guys... |
Welcome aboard Kaleem! It's good to have you with us. Enjoy
the site and forums! |
welcome Bud! If you need anything let me know I'm right over the boarder in Buffalo NY.
Read my intro to get an idea of what I do...maybe we can work together in the future sometime... |
Sure, maybe we can work together one day. I've done web programming, so if you're looking for assistance in doing, web stuff feel free to pick at my brain.
