Bristol, UK here. Largely corporate and media stuff at the moment on professional basis (ie I get paid for some of it). Shooting with XL1s and Mac based editing system (FCP etc) plus music composition and production. Always happy to learn.

Ed Smith December 21st, 2005 09:47 AM

Hi Jim,

Welcome to the board from Hampshire! Nice to see a few more people from the UK.

Cheers,

Jim Rog December 22nd, 2005 09:48 PM

Hi

i have an fx1 with xlr input, dolly, green screen, and some other bits. i would like to get together and make a short film what will make us all rich do you think this is realistic?

Robbie Dorward December 27th, 2005 09:55 PM

hi, Rob here, Norwich (Uni) and Leicester (Home sweet home). Got nothing at the mo, except a little experience with DV from when i was doing A-Levels. Very not bad though, apparently got a 'natural' gift for it. Hopefully gonna get kitted out with a top-end camera, then other stuff when i get used to it. Also always game for new projects, but only when i got the time. P.s my grammar sucks :)

Quinn OConnell December 28th, 2005 04:13 AM

London -

Hey all,

Great to hear .. i work for a small independent production company here in London and i have 3 shorts to shoot in the next few months for various comps and fests, i have 3 scripts ready to shoot, have pretty much all the gear, XM2, ( FX1, DVX owners welcomed !!!) manfrotto legs and head, Rode Vidmic - mac based edit suite Letus35a & SG35 35 mm adaptors, Canon Fd primes 28mm F2, 50mm F1.4, 85mm F1.8 and a wicked Tamron 135mm F2.5, Raynox Fisheye 0.3x, plus a skateboard (dolly)

I'm looking to direct these films although shooting (DP) is my preferred domain.. but as these are written by me and a friend i would ideally like to direct and offer the DP role to an aspiring talent to show his/her worth.. i want to use 35mm lenses so advanced photography understanding is vital..
Equipment not necessary but HD as i said will be great if you can bring along - 2 cam is better than one..

anyway - i cant manage all of this gear alone and am keen to get people like you guys involved.. so if your in London and want to get on to a craking project or two them let me know.. this is a serious call up so if 'your not' pls dont waste your time

Cheers

Quinn

Hi I'm from Hertford but based at Southampton Uni.I have an xm2 and was involved in the production of a British Snowboard movie last year. Would be keen to get involved in something new although my experience is limited.

Jim Rog January 1st, 2006 10:37 AM

Hi

forgot to add i also have the sony uwp-c1 lavaliere and a manfrotto

sounds like we got some good gear in here maybe we should think about getting together?

Quinn

is this paid work or are you just offering people to get experience in the field? Can you tell us more about the projects what are they based around? Are you shooting in a studio or out and about on different locations? what kind of time frame are you giving each project? i would be interested in getting involved but like chris my experience is also limited but i am sure we will pick things up

Thanks

Graham Bernard January 1st, 2006 10:40 AM

Quinn? I've sobered up now . . .sesshh... Grazie . .

Chris Schulz January 1st, 2006 11:38 AM

Jim, where abouts are you from?
Do you have any ideas for projects?

I am planning to do a bike/camp tour in the summer of Hawaii's Big Island with a friend. We will be exploring sights etc off the beaten track. The kind of places even most locals know little about. Was thinking of shooting it as a documentary and perhaps incorporating some of Hawaiis history/culture.

Otherwise I am somewhat stuck for ideas. I have a lot of experience in filming snowboarding, but would be up for getting into scripted movies and/or documentaries too.

What are other peoples plans etc?

Quinn OConnell January 2nd, 2006 05:20 AM

Jim..

Hi there, projects are short films and unfortunately not paid. I have most of the gear and met up with Grazie last week and between us the gear is covered but more manpower can always be a bonus, i guess its just about getting together and talking over a few ideas and making something casue thats what we want to do..
i your in the london area then do give me a bell 07888836702 and well meet and talk it over.

As for time frame its just a matter of securing the crew, casting is taking place now ( cheers Grazie once again) but logistically the locations have been planned and casting for the bigger project is 80% done..

Lots going on so let me know if your interested in geting involved. via email on my name..

* Chris - got your email.. will reply soon.
Snowboarding films aye! well i have reels and reels of surf footage from al over the world and a few bands aching to soundtrack some extreme sports - how bout keeping in touch and get an editor to cut it all up.. burn it and distribute it..

Q

Chris Schulz January 2nd, 2006 07:42 AM

I have FCP and most of my best footage has already been used for a snowboard film, but I still have rights to my footage and have plenty of contacts within the UK industry too. However although that is my passion, unfortunately the whole 'extreme sports' (hate that term) has been played out way way too much. Maybe you have some kind of interesting perspective to take instead? Otherwise I am keen to get into something different, anything really. Definitely stay in touch.

Robin Davies-Rollinson January 2nd, 2006 08:42 AM

Well guys, if you want some really good locations and you're prepared to travel west to Wales, then I can certainly help you out...

Chris Schulz January 2nd, 2006 12:04 PM

Robin, locations for what? surfing? I've been going to Abersoch for the last two summers. Really nice if the weather cooperates.

Robin Davies-Rollinson January 2nd, 2006 12:14 PM

Chris - can't help you with the weather, sorry, but for locations we've got rural, coastal,sand-dunes, mountains, lakes, rivers, streams, country houses, cities, villages etc. etc.
(and we shoot Doctor Who in Cardiff :-) )

Robin

Chris Schulz January 2nd, 2006 12:32 PM

yeh its true, the country side is real nice, never really thought of doing filming there. Although we almost set up an editing suite there to edit our last project (not many distractions in rural wales!)

Daniel Morgan January 5th, 2006 08:29 AM

Hey everyone,

I'm based in Bournemouth University for the next year. I'm interested collaborating with anyone in the local area. You can see my latest film @ http://www.dvxuser.com/V3/showthread.php?t=40167

I'm filming again in a month and might need some extra hands. Shooting using a mixture of stickypods, dvx and 35mm adapter.

Let me know if your interested.

Cheers,

Dan

Nice one Dan

Saw your short, really liked it mate, you have a good eye for composition ( or was that your cameraman?) , snappy edits.. what CC did you use? if any, colours were kinda de-saturated but still rich..

good stuff. ..

Q

Declan Smith January 6th, 2006 04:14 AM

Dan

That was really good. You can really empathize with the main character. Love the style, lots of closes up at first showing he's been cramped & squeezed, then wider shots towards the end showing his world opening up.

Did you use any 35mm adapters with that ?

Really liked it.

Quinn OConnell January 6th, 2006 04:19 AM

Nice one Dan

sorry posted twice - it cut out before

Jim Rog January 6th, 2006 09:33 PM

is it the camera that gave it the film look?

Graham Bernard January 7th, 2006 01:48 AM

Dan superb work - truly superb. You're at Uni now, well somebody is gonna snap you up - quick time!

Your artistry and understanding of pace and moment have been carefully crafted. Your links with the audio and the movement of the actors is simple and as a result powerful. I see from the credits you've got a great team of people too.

Can you, like Quinn asked, flesh out some of the technical stuff? Please?

You've inspired me to do better - much better!

Grazie

He used a 35mm adaptor which created a shallower DOF. But the camera technique and post-production probably helped give a little more of a 'film look' too

Mike Marriage January 7th, 2006 04:06 AM

Essex.

Lovely place :)

Daniel Morgan January 7th, 2006 06:49 AM

It was all shot digital. We used a Panasonic AJ-SDC615 DVCPRO cam with the standard lens. (no 35mm adapter)

Even though I dont post much I'm always reading this board, so a big thanks for the kind words.

As standard the camera had a fairly average depth of field. We just played around with the shutter speed, iris, focal distance and the distance of the camera from the subject to get the depth. I think one of the most important things in the 'film like' look is the lighting. I'm not an expert but I figure that if you use a 3 point lighting set-up your images weigh in alot more and the production values look alot greater.

There was a fair bit of post done - just to make the images look a bit nicer. Cold to Warm ect. Custom magic bullet presets were used on some of the footage. Also the sky at the end is completely fake and was composited in Shake.

Im shooting a ten minute film on the 3rd Feb. I've decided to go with a DVX100 and Wayne's SG35 adapter. This is the film that really counts so it's gotta be better than this one. I like the DVCPRO cams but after de-interlacing I dont think there's much seperating it from the DVX. I figure that 25P with 35mm lenses will be better than the standard DVCPRO. I want to pull off an image which looks timeless or resembles a folk song... that raw but polished look. y'know what i mean?

Anyone got any thoughts on this? .. I think the whole 4:1 whatever stuff is different which is a shame.

a HVX with an SG35.. thats the dream.

I'd like to be involved in any kind of callaboration if anyone has any plans,

Jim Rog January 7th, 2006 09:10 AM

you done really well this is really great stuff wish my camera had that kind of look to it that’s what i like about it the look and feel about the whole thing

great job

James Connors January 7th, 2006 10:21 PM

Glad I stopped by today, that was definitely worth watching. The end shot is beautiful, very nicely done.

From Cardiff, mainly gig video work at the moment on a PD150 w/ Canopus 16x9 lens. Second unit is a TRV950 which is pain now cos I can't shoot "real" widescreen with it, and I can't afford the lens adapter. Also its not really adapt for the low lighting conditions.. I need to find a use for it to get my moneys worth I feel, so something in the summer hopefully :)

Daniel Morgan January 8th, 2006 05:37 AM

nice - what bands have you filmed? I've done a few and always enjoy it. If it's informal its great fun having a few pints and filming a band you actually really like. Not to mention a good quality live recording at the end.

I usualy travel up to London and film in the Barfly. I've got a job filming Mogwai in the ICA on the 12th or 13th.

Robin - Although I'm in Bournemouth Uni I was born in Cardiff and have lived in North Wales until I left for HE. Have you ever had any contact with the Welsh Broadcasting Trust? Or any other Welsh filming fund? - Apparently they send a few Welsh Nationals off to NYC Film School every year.

Paul Jefferies January 11th, 2006 07:20 PM

Hi,
I'm newish to this site, so I thought I would say hello. I have set up a small production company with a few colleagues, and we've worked on several music videos this year - I don't know if I'm allowed to link to a site where they can be seen but here goes...
www. eye-saw.co.uk
This is not my own site. My contribution to the productions includes lighting, camera and grip (the Jib shots-including the wobbly ones!)

Paul R Johnson January 13th, 2006 11:50 AM

Well I'm based in Lowestoft, with a Norwich office - but mainly work from home. Off to Italy tomorrow for a beginners ski segment - they said can you ski, I said yes, they asked if I could ski with a camera, I said yes - two of us are off to see if we really can do it. I've got a sticky pod that should poke out of my ski jacket (with luck) not sure how stable the images will be though. Skiing hand holding the camera is a bit tricky!

Daniel Morgan January 14th, 2006 04:14 AM

Hope this isnt too late.. You could try wearing a hard helmet and depending on how big your camera is, sticking the camera to your head with one stickypod sucker. Sketchy.

Jim Rog January 20th, 2006 05:15 PM

How easy is it to get into shooting weddings and making some money out of it part time or if it really takes off could do it full time. i have a fair bit of equipment so if anyone doesn’t already do anything in the way of professional work and wants to join up with me i would be interested in starting something. i hear there is good money to be made in doing this, anyone know what shooting the average wedding pays in the uk? i only have one HD camera so 2 or 3 would be best so we can get all the different angle shots, shoot it all in HD plus do all the editing and delivering all the footage onto a DVD for the client.

Andy Graham January 20th, 2006 07:26 PM

I've just started a business filmming weddings with an old college buddy and we are charging £550 for the basic package and ranging up to £1400 which comes with a photographer (also an old college buddy) all of which are two camera shoots.

As for getting into it, ask around the family and friends and see who's getting married...theres always someone who knows someone. We also made some flyers to go in any wedding orientated shops we could find and some not so wedding orientated!.

I've heard mixed feelings about getting a stall at wedding fairs, some people think its worth it others think its a rip off, were gonna try it once to see how it goes. But ultimately its word of mouth thats your best advertisement, do a few for friends and family and use them as examples of your work.

I found starting the business was a pain in the ass... all that damn paper work and meetings with the bank and business gateway (who if you apply to with a business plan they give you a £1000 grant by the way). But hopefully it will be worth it.

Andy.
