A review on dcresource.com discusses the sharpness/focusing issue. That author thinks that Canon has made an intentional decision to go 'soft' on their images (odd, given the sharpness of their video...).

So, one suggestion would be to increase the sharpness in the camera to +2 and see if that improves the focus/softness issue.
