Unflattering Pictures of Hollywood People

Do the people who take pictures of hollwood people for celeb magazines have to get that persons permission before they submit the picture to the celeb magazine?

Well I don't know. I think they do it anyway, that's why you sometimes here in the news that a celebrity complains about pictures that were released about him or her.

No. That's why the celebs hate the paparazzi.

Richard,

As "public figures" a celebrity is fair game in a public space. Images are considered newsworthy.

There are a number of issues that come into play when shooting people in a public forum, and selling their images.

Is the person a 'public figure'?

Is the image newsworthy?

Also coming under consideration, are you invading a persons right to publicity? (The right to make money off their image?) Taking a picture of Paul Newman walking down broadway is one thing... putting that picture on your own brand of spaghetti sauce is another.

Just because you can 'see' the person, doesn't make it a public forum. Renting a crane or helicopter to shoot with an extra long lens over a high wall where they have an expectation for privacy is another matter.

All of these things come into play. That's why there are so many lawsuits.
