Packing Tripod for Overseas Travel

Any recommendations for how to pack/transport a tripod on a plane for overseas travel? Will it be all right in a suitcase?

I've done the London Heathrow/LA/Auckland trip with a Gitzo Carbon fibre tripod simply placed in the bottom of an Eagle Creek case on five occasions, without any problem. On more than one occasion there has been a feeder flight at both ends and the baggage has been checked through.

I guess carbon fibre is too strong for the average baggage handler to mangle!
