I personally like Don's idea of "Tales of Wonder and Woe."
Quote:
I like those, they get my vote... ~Gabriel |
oh, looky here...young gabriel. at last, we have a sighting. how is Young Love treating you, gabe?
"Tales of Wonder and Woe" is a bit gothic, i think, from the depths of my over-wrought personality...a bit too h.p. lovecraft, i would say. it makes me think of catacombs and manacles and scorned love. but i'm glad to hear that folks like the turn of the phrase, for what it is.... benjamin's "animal-tested" has a kernel in it...maybe we should print up that whole standard "no animals were harmed in the making of this movie" blurb in small print below the logo... "animal-tested, planet Earth-approved" "Earth-friendly media from all across the globe" there's no such thing as too many good ideas! keep spewing them out! |
O.K. Jason ...
I'm old and slow, you've got to explain that one for me ... Mr Ducks, Mr Not ... UWOL My mind just doesn't have the reach! Cat |
interesting trivia tidbit that i just learned that might be of general interest...
the American Humane Association has registered "no animals were harmed" as a trademark...so we can't mimic their material, although i think "animal-tested" is ok... and they have a downloadable PDF with their guidelines at their website. it's not really pertinent to shooting animals in the wild, but it is kind of interesting reading for anyone interested in the ethical treatment of animals in Hollywood films. |
UWOL Challenge "Focused on Nature"
Brian |
UWOL....'Life through your lens'
or 'Life through the lens' |
it's really hard to find a single line that sums up the experience....we've kicked around some pretty good ideas and had some fun doing it, but i'm still jealous of "cheaper than film school" --because it is also witty. witty is always good, not entirely necessary, but it definitely adds...
the salient points of UWOL: 1) it's international 2) it's focused on nature and outdoors 3) you meet a lot of cool people 4) you learn a lot about making better video wish i could come up with a single line that encapsulates all of the salient points, but something is always left out. they don't call this a Challenge fer nuthin' --this is harder than making my NIGHT entry.... |
Quote:
I think it's right there in front of you/us. UWOL - made by international cool people, making better nature and outdoors video. or UWOL Always the real thing, always (or; meeting) international cool people making better nature and outdoors video. As always my English gramma is a bit of a drawback for me. Geir Inge |
a little clunky, though, dontcha think?
we could shorten it to "nature videos made by internationally cool people." did i mention clunky??? |
UWOL Challenge: Viewing the Nature of Things....
UWOL Challenge: Exploring the Nature of Things. |
ok, this was a lot of fun. you guys had some great ideas and it was a lot of fun brainstorming. in the end, i think we are going with "our world, your vision"--mostly, because i want to put the slogan in every language of our players and this one should translate universally, whereas some of the more clever puns probably do not.... (if i'm wrong about that, i'm sure i'll hear about it!)
so now what i need is...translations!!! i need all of you norwegians, swedes, french, south africans, etc, etc etc. players to post translations here...and if i can't replicate the symbols of your language on my keyboard, would you please send me a high-resolution (300 dpi) version to my e-mail? uwol@comcast.net or hit dvinfo e-mail reply. gotta get moving on these t-shirts! |

(Geir and Per, you agree?) |
Trond, yes that's what I was thinking about too, but I'm not sure if that's what Meryem is saying!?
The word vision - can we translate it to any other than "visjon" (norwegian)? Geir-Inge any thoughts? |
OK, here's mine.
"UWOL - God Created Nature, We put it on Video" Bob |
I would say... don't translate. not to swedish, I want my Tee in English and I'm the only one from sweden (right now), so don't print i swedish.
Swedis ppl are international and don't mind english printed T-shirts. In Swedish the word "Vision" can be translated in to diferent words, same problem as in Norwegian. I guess that you guy from Norway fells kind of the same with english print or? Edit: And it looks cooler in English too ;) |
Markus,
yes, I agree. English is almost as common as our own language, must be because we are very small countries in population compared to US, England, France. Number of inhabitants in Norway is 4.5 million, a medium city in US I think ;-) Geir Inge, Trond and Vidar what do you think? PS! I was thinking of you Vidar when we had our meeting yesterday. Next time you will be there right? |
Maybe the slogan could be "UWOL-cheaper than Planet Earth DVD box"
or UWOL-Life thro a lens or UWOL-World thro a Lens anyway... I you (meryem) don't really want to print (it would cost more) in multi language, I vote "print in English". Maybe print in french to, but then half of the world can read you Tee... Don't overwork it... |
I think what Meryem wants to do is to have the slogan translated into all the different languages of the people who have entered the challenge and have them ALL listed on the back of the t-shirt.
Kind of like you see a concert tour listing on the back of a shirt. so it would be something like: Our world, your vision vår verden, din visjon etc. I think that would give the shirt a real international flavor and show everyone how truly global UWOL has become. |
Way cool idea! The slogan in all the languages. Can't beat that idea!
Cat |
I think Markus and Per Johann have a point.
|
In French: notre monde, votre vision
In traditional Chinese: 我們的世界 你的觀點 And I like the idea of all the languages. |
yes, exactly what kevin said...i want it in all the languages together, English included....to showcase our international reach.
thanks for the translations, keep em coming! |

In Norwegian (2 names for world):
1) Vaar verden - din visjon 2) Vaar jord - din visjon I like it better in the English version because whats right in one language ain't necessarily right in another language. Here's a jpg file with norwegian letters: |
that is interesting...what is the difference in the shades of meaning between "verden" and "jord"?
|
World you can put to different meanings like; the whole world, or the room/comunity you're in is your world etc, as the word "Jord" is our planet earth or the soil you're walking on.
|
benjamin: when you say "traditional" chinese, is that mandarin? or something else?...your translations motivated me to look up a little info on language in Taiwan...i had no idea Taiwan was such a mash-up of different cultures and different languages. i'm speculating from your name, that you're not a native of taiwan...so what brought you there, what's your story?
UWOL "your lens on a global education" |

Our World, Your Vision Vår Verden, Din Visjon Notre Monde, Votre Vision 我們的世界 你的觀點 now come on, won't this look cool listed on the back of a t-shirt with our UWOL logo? bring me more translations! ...still waiting on the swahili...where is that john dennis robertson? |
got a English to Spanish Version from a free on line translator:
Nuestro Mundo, su Visión Free Latin Tranlation: Nostrum Mundus , Vestri Visum or Nostrum Universitas , Vestri Visum Free Portuguese Translation: Nosso Mundo, Sua Visão |

This would be the translation to Swedish: Vår värld - Din vision If you want it as a pic, what type and size? in some way you should be able to type "ring" and "two dots" over A. In Illustrator (or any Adobe program) you can get the type window with all different letters. |

I don't mind having only English text on the t-shirts. |
Quote:
thanks for the translation, markus! linguists say that about half the world's languages will vanish in the next hundred years due to globalization...and if you vikings have your way, norwegian will be the next to go! |
1. We shoot Outdoors
2. the most fun Outdoors 3. Uwollers do it with Style 4. No Boundries No limits ok not so easy to come up with is it?? |
Just read the one,
Our world, your vision!! It gets my vote!!!! |

Still need Japanese.... oh Kaku, where are you? -gb- |
well, i was kind of thinking that i would stick with languages from the countries currently represented in UWOL, either because someone is from that country, or a shooter traveled and shot there--that's an easy way to self-select and not overly clutter it...and those countries are...
United Kingdom Canada Norway Sweden South Africa France The Kingdom of Bhutan Australia Germany United States ...and we're holding our breath this round for...Turkey and Taiwan, although I'm hoping that even if this round tortured them into the tank, that they'll be back.... and, now that i think about it, Gilles Debord shot guanacos in Chile, so we can add Spanish legitimately. tell Rob and Kaku to sign up and make us something regionally interesting. (you, too, Greg!) Remember, it's only 3 minutes in 3 weeks, how hard can it be? Heh. heh heh. |
My thought was to appeal to the world in the future, and not have to redesign....
|
Hey Chris, it's all good--you poor UWOLers are probably subject to way more of my tortuous thinking-out-loud ruminations and seat-of-the-pants formulations than is actually necessary!
