Tales of Wonder and Woe - UWOL #14

Thought I'd get this thread started.

Had an exceptional day filming Saturday. So much so that I was able to put together a film. I'm sure I'll do something totally different by the deadline but it's nice to know I won't be in the shark tank. :)

Getting ready to head back out this morning and see if I can continue to get some different footage than what I normally shoot.

Hard to believe my little rapids on Prairie Creek won't be in the film. I think it's been in almost every film I've done. :) Maybe I better go out and shoot a bit of the rapids just in case. :)

Headed to California on Friday. So we'll see if I can come up with something to add while I'm out there. Won't work with what I currently have though so we'll see.

Mike Beckett July 12th, 2009 12:22 PM

Cor, someone's been busy!

So far I've just managed an hour in the bath today, planning my film. I will credit my co-producer, Mr Rubber Duck.

I'm currently figuring out how to work rain into my theme... I think it may be unavoidable this time round.

Annie Haycock July 12th, 2009 01:04 PM

What's that song - "listen to the rhythm of the falling rain . . . . "

A still from some of the footage I shot yesterday.
Was a fantastic day except for the bloodsuckers. Got bit about twenty times so Burt's Natural Bug repellant does nothing for Iowa skeeters. Also pulled off four ticks once I got home.
The sacrifices we make for UWOL! :)

Dale Guthormsen July 14th, 2009 10:09 AM

Kevin,

first thing I did was set down with one of my guitars and work out "Listen to the rythm of the falling rain" and thought I could use it, now I see someone else has grabbed it!!

probably wont rain enough to get the footage anyway!

On to a new idea, Hummmm!!!!

Victor Wilcox July 14th, 2009 11:43 AM

I've forgotten what rain looks like. We've had less than 2" in the last 60 days (normal is 10"+). We've been under a heat advisory that long to (heat index over 105F).

Guess I can video the ground cracking, the grass turning brown or my electric meter spinning like a top.

Rich Ryan July 14th, 2009 12:23 PM

Was out of town for the weekend. When I saw the topic, my first thought was that this was going to be easy. As I have been reviewing my options, I feel like I am going into idea paralysis. Every topic seems great until I think about it a bit more and then find something wrong. I guess I am just going to have to go shoot something.

At least I don't have to worry about rain here in California, but it's a good thing the topic isn't "green".

Kevin - couldn't you at least pretend this was a bit harder... (-:

Sam Mendolia July 14th, 2009 01:20 PM

I just got back from Algonquin, downloaded 10 hours worth of tape, over the last 2 days.

Now, the arduous task of seeing if there is anything worthy of the competition.

I hate swimming!!!

Kevin Railsback July 14th, 2009 03:09 PM

Rich, you equate done quickly with good. Sometimes the two are VERY far apart. :)

Dale, why not use it? I think it would awesome especially if you're doing the music yourself. besides as you know we all have the same theme and our films are always different. So if someone else wanted to use that music, their film would still be different from yours.

I say go for it!!

Trond Saetre July 15th, 2009 07:00 AM

An idea popped up in my head, and I have filmed a little for my entry.
Been nice weather here for weeks too. Well that means until the last few days when we have had a nice mix of sun and rain.
Had to stop filming before I got all I wanted today.
My camera is allergic to the wet rain. :)

Chris Barcellos July 15th, 2009 11:07 PM

I had a big scare, thought I was having a stroke. Dodged that, but I am going to be semi-out of commission for about a week or more and I am not sure how that will affect my ability to shoot. I am suffering from a rather scary disease-- Bells Palsey.

I am reading everything with my left eye right now,,,, not my best eye. I used to joke with people that when I finally went to a wedding that I wasn't shooting that I would still be watching with my left eye closed. That's exactly what happens with this disease. This disease actually freezes your eye open, and this occurred on my right side. When I try to use both, the left tries close down, because the right isn't blinking, and it is expecting it to respond. So I have to wear a patch on the right eye. To protect it from damages from not blinking.

Also have compelte numbness on right side of face, lips won't work, and I stagger like an old drunk....

see wiki on this : Bell's palsy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A lesson here for outdoor shooters, with similar symptoms. Lyme's disease should be considered as a possible culprit....

I still hope to have something on board..

Kevin Railsback July 16th, 2009 04:53 AM

Wow Chris, I have a few friends that had that in the past. One woman had it on her wedding day. All her wedding pictures from the hospital show her with half her face paralyzed. Truly scary stuff!

Hope you recover VERY soon!!!

Per Johan Naesje July 16th, 2009 05:22 AM

Chris, very sad to hear about your suffering, hope youŽll recover soon!

Hope to get my footage finished this weekend, as IŽll be very busy the next few weeks. If weather and some shy creatures will cooperative, I will be very happy. Finger crossed!

Mat Thompson July 16th, 2009 10:14 AM

That sounds horrible Chris. My best wishes for a swift recovery fella!

Mat

Bob Thieda July 16th, 2009 10:19 AM

Dang it, Chris, that doesn't sound good.
Take care of yourself...

Sam Mendolia July 16th, 2009 10:29 AM

Sorry to here that Chris.

My brother got that, after he got back from his honeymoon, over 20 years ago.

You can still notice little things, his smile is a little different, and when he sleeps, one of his eyes does not fully close.

That is all, he has recovered otherwise.
They are not sure what caused this.

Hope you recover quickly, and it does not affect your abilities to greatly.
I know that you will adapt, and do things differently, and still be productive.

Mike Beckett July 16th, 2009 02:18 PM

Chris,

Gosh, that makes all our little silly tales of woe pale into insignficance.

Fingers crossed for a full and speedy recovery. Hope you're back behind the lens soon!

Chris Barcellos July 17th, 2009 12:37 AM

Thanks for thoughts.... here is video I made.... In front of lens. Thought it would a service to those dealing with this to see what others are going through.

Chris, good to know that youŽre optimistic regarding your recovery. Interesting to watch!

BTW, I got some really nice footage last night. The 2 attached pics is screen grabs from a couple of stop motion sequences. Imagine Antony VivaldiŽs "Four Seasons - summer" accompanied to this beautiful sequences.
The Scandinavian summer night is fantastic, lots of beautiful views!

Trond Saetre July 17th, 2009 03:10 PM

Chris, I hope you recover quick and well.

Chris Barcellos July 17th, 2009 10:48 PM

Thanks again every one for you kind wishes...

Rich Ryan July 18th, 2009 08:34 PM

Chris, sorry to hear about your scare with the stroke. Your courage with how you are handling the Bells Palsy is an inspirationl.

I did manage to get some video for the competition today. Still need a few more outings to put my concept together

Sam Mendolia July 20th, 2009 01:57 PM

Hello Meryem,

I am almost finished with my entry to challenge 14, where will I be uploading it to?

Send me an email, sammendolia@hotmail.com, incase mine has gone astray, as well.

Rich Ryan July 20th, 2009 02:33 PM

Vegas Compression Recommendations

I am using Sony Vegas Pro (8.0c or 9.0) to edit my entry. I have not had much experience trying to compress to such a small size. I am shooting in HD (16:9).

Does anyone have any recommended Render settings?

Thanks in advance,
Rich

Meryem Ersoz July 21st, 2009 11:50 AM

Everyone should have their uploading password by now, if you don't receive it today, shoot me an email at uwol@comcast.net tomorrow....

Mike Beckett July 21st, 2009 11:56 AM

Woe, woe, woe... I'm struggling to find time to shoot and edit my entry this time round, due to family and work commitments. Hoping I can get a day off soon and get out there, fingers crossed.

From winner to crashing out into the shark tank. Not something to be proud of!

Rich, IŽm not on Vegas, but here is a thread who maybe will help you out:
http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/uwol-chal...file-50mb.html

Maybe someone else on Vegas will chime in?

Rich Ryan July 21st, 2009 02:24 PM

Per,

Thanks.

I reviewed that thread earlier. It provides some help, but its not very Vegas specific. I thought we were at 60 MB now?

I use the main concept mp4 setting. Check out my entry in 13, to see if you like it.

Here is a screen grab of how you might want to go. Adjust for file size from there. Don't forget to go into audio and check box for audio.

Save setting for future use.

Sam Mendolia July 21st, 2009 05:43 PM

Okay, so I'm almost ready to upload......

Just had to work on one line in the credits, called my wife, because the info was at home.
She was painting the girls room, and couldn't get down to where I had my info stored.

I thought, heck, it's one line, I'll do it when I get home, and then start compressing.

Get home, add the line in the credits....

This is all on my portable hard drive... that I take to work with me.

It looked good at work, and sounded great---to me that is.

So I'm sitting back, watching my laptop getting ready to play the creation in Premiere...

It starts, then..... man what happened.... all my well placed and edited music and other edited sounds.... they either weren't there, or were the wrong piece of audio all together.

I don't have a clue what happened, I closed down the drive, put it in my bag, rode my bike home, had dinner, booted up, and......

I haven't saved anything that got done this evening, so, the drive goes backto work with me, to use on the same computer I edited the video on.

Luckily I did not turn off the computer, and I hope the I.T. guys do any remote updates, that restart the system, and all will be well in the morning.

Luckily it is only,"knock on wood", the audio that is messed up.
Not a good start, but I'm not treading water, yet!

ARRRGH!!!!

P.S.

Premiere did not shut down properly, aand I restarted the project, and then it shut itself down. Do you think.......

ARRRRRGH!!!!

Rich, I only shoot SD, and I use Sorenson Squeeze to compress the video.
Not vegas specific, but I can share my settings with you if it helps you.

Sam Mendolia July 22nd, 2009 07:18 AM

A tale of wonder...

last night my tale was of woe, but today I am back at work, and all is well in the world of Premiere.

All files played nicely together.

I have converted them, and uploaded them to the site.

I am also converting them, so that they can go tothe Vimeo site, link to follow later.

Thanks. I think the info Chris gave me has me going down the right path. I still have two or three more days of shooting to get everything I need. Hopefully the fog here will cooperate.

Sam Mendolia July 22nd, 2009 08:56 AM

Is it proper to post a link to Vimeo, now, for you to see, or should I wait until the contest is closed?

I am thrilled to not be in the shark tank, on my second attempt at this, thus consider me a newbie, with questions.

All criticisms on my work, are considered part of the learning curve.

Trond Saetre July 23rd, 2009 04:00 AM

Sam,
We usually wait until after the deadline to post our feedback threads and the links to the video.
In the feedback thread it is also a good thing to tell a little about your video and the making of it.

Anyway, it's good you finished your entry. I'm not even close to begin the editing of mine yet.

Sam Mendolia July 23rd, 2009 05:28 AM

Thanks Trond,

I will remember this, for the next time.

Meryem Ersoz July 23rd, 2009 05:36 AM

Hi Sam: Trond is exactly right - I pulled your Vimeo link but will restore it once the uploads are linked and ready. It got a little sloppy around these parts with the pre-posting, and I had to get tough with you all. Hope you understand. I'm looking forward to seeing your film, the title is intriguing.

Geir Inge July 23rd, 2009 08:42 AM

I have an idea for my uwol 14 video and was out to get some shots yesterday.
It consider an old boat house amongst others.
Well, well, well, how stupid can a man be?

1) I forgot my tapes at home.
2) Well forget about the tapes, I didn't even bring with me charged batteries.
3) No I can't just pop home to get more batteries or tape, as long as I have to make a 45 min one way trip with the ferry.

Can you believe it?
Do you have a first grade for uwolers Mereyem?

Geir Inge
