A list of wildlife festivals internationally:

Re: UWOL "get together" event 2016?

So are most people thinking they want to get together and attend a film festival?

I'm looking to go where I can shoot some footage. Don't really have any interest in film festivals unless I'm supporting someone that has a film in the festival.

Heck, I've never been to the Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival and that's the big one here in the US.

This would be my primary interest too.

Re: UWOL "get together" event 2016?

As Wildscreen was originally my suggestion I should explain that although held in Bristol town centre the area around there, particularly the Somerset Levels offer great filming opportunities, including at that time of the year large starling murmurations. What I would add is that filming wildlife in the UK is not easy and does require quite a bit dedication and time. For those of you looking for good easy filming this is probably not the trip for you. On the other hand if you want to educate yourselves as to what it takes get noticed in the wildlife film business, learn new skills and techniques, plus rub shoulders and learn from the best in the industry this option would be for you. Wildscreen is much more than a film festival, best described as a convention that includes workshops and seminars with a film festival attached.

May I throw a spanner in the works and suggest another location Extrmedura, Spain. Please google to see whats on offer. Although I have not visited I have many friends who have and rate it as excellent for wildlife. You would need to be looking at April or May .

If Africa floats your boat I do have good contacts in Kenya and Tanzania. In Kenya I have used Porini Safari Camps - Award Winning Eco Camps in Kenya. Jake the director could certainly work out a good deal for us, obviously dependent on numbers. His price would be in dollars not including international flights.
In Tanzania I know of a fixer who also has a small camp and could organise things for us. For either Kenya or Tanzania I would be happy to organise some costings etc, but would need to know some numbers. again this would be for the safari not the international flights Also remember you do need various jabs and anti malaria medication and visa's.

Re: UWOL "get together" event 2016?

Yes, I would imagine a Festival would provide a focus, and then excursions could be arranged around it.

Further to the above, I currently work in the tourism industry in Uganda, and have previously done so in Kenya, Tanzania & South Africa.

@Chris Hurd
I just now read that you are planning a meeting in Amsterdam next year, and I might be able to get you a sharp prize for a stay in one of the NH Hotels there, since I work for this company.

@All
This is the case for all NH Hotels around the world. Even if not for a get together and you plan to stay in a NH hotel I can see what I can do.

Send me an e-mail if you are interested.

Re: UWOL "get together" event 2016?

So far, two destinations seem to stand out:

1. Bristol UK (and the film festival October 2016)

2. Norway - Kvamsøy - Runde (Geir Inge's backyard)
Best time of year to visit this place, should probably be Geir Inge's decision, but I guess spring or late summer?

I suggest we vote for these two options, and whichever gets most votes, becomes our location for the 2016 get together.

Please submit your votes to uwol@dvinfo.net
Votes closes at midnight June 7.

I didn't get in to vote but this sounds like a great venue for our first UWOL meetup.

Plenty of time to start socking money away for the trip.

Who knows, maybe one of us will have a film in the festival.

This will be fun for sure!
Hope many will be able to join in.
If anyone from "the early uwol days" also see this, you should absolutely join us too!

Re: UWOL "get together" event 2016?

Airfare from Cedar Rapids to Bristol is about $1500 round trip if I were to fly this October.

I'm guessing we may see about getting a block of rooms at a hotel to get a discount maybe?

Wildscreen tickets are a little pricey but the whole reason for going to Bristol is to attend the festival.

Already told the girlfriend we're gng to England next year so she's stoked to be going too!

Do we know the dates of the festival yet?

I need to schedule my vacation by the end of December to lock it in for 2016

Re: UWOL "get together" event 2016?

I'm looking at the Wildscreen website, but I can't find anything after the 2014 festival.

The only thing they write about 2016, is on the front page: "We'll see you in October 2016".
Home Page | Wildscreen Film Festival

Re: UWOL "get together" event 2016?

Hopefully they'll announce it before the end of December or I'll just have to take a guess as to when it is. :)

Re: UWOL "get together" event 2016?

Here is the answer I received today after asking on facebook:

"We are currently consulting on the best date to schedule Wildscreen 2016 and expect to be able to confirm that date in the very near future. We do know it will be October, as usual, but it is quite a busy month for film/tv/photography and we want to do our best to avoid clashing with other events."

Kevin Railsback October 15th, 2015 07:13 AM

Re: UWOL "get together" event 2016?

Well, I would think the very near future will hopefully be before the end of the year. :)

Hi Trond:

I think you're awesome working to actually make this reunion event happen, and I'm happy for everyone who could make such a trip. --And Chris, for you to try to break a deal for where people stay, wow!

Then again, Trond and Kevin together in the same city? (shudder) ..... look out!

Re: UWOL "get together" event 2016?

Karina and I are thinking if we're going to the UK we should go for two weeks so we can do the festival and meet everyone and then do the touristy thing as well.

Now to decide if we want to be there the week before or the week after the festival?

Hope a lof of people can make it. I know it's certainly not cheap to fly to another country but I'm hoping to get some filming in as well while I'm there.

I'm sure the closer it gets to October the more of a game plan we'll have.

I'll make sure I get this locked into my vacation request before the end of the year!

Re: UWOL "get together" event 2016?

I think that mike sims suggestion is a great idea, I could even afford that being it is only one country away.

I'd love to go to Norway, I even have some family there, however I must say the overall expense is to great for me to handle these days.

Oh yea, my daughter even lives in montana and my wifes's best old friend lives in misoula. So,
I may be a little biased.

Re: UWOL "get together" event 2016?

Anyone know when we need to book hotel for this event?
Maybe we get the best price by one booking for everyone? (if that doesn't become too complicated)

Anyway, just bumping this up to make it more visible again.

Re: UWOL "get together" event 2016?

I have that week booked for vacation so I'm set there.

I have a timeshare condo that I want to see if I can exchange for one in Bristol if they have them.

Airfare sure is scary. Like $1500 from Iowa.

Re: UWOL "get together" event 2016?

What does everyone plan? Buying full week's pass, or just "single days"?

I'm in the think-tank. Maybe buy "single days" for the film festival, and then have some days checking out Bristol, filming a little...

Anyone knows which hotels we should look at?

Edit:
We should probably book hotels and flights within the next few months to get the best available prices.
A group booking for hotel could probably give us a discount too.

Geir Inge January 30th, 2016 05:09 AM

Re: UWOL "get together" event 2016?

Thank you Mick for updating us.
If I go to Bristol I will buy daytickets.
My dad and my Mother in law, both old and not so well.
As for now I take one day at a time.
If I go to Bristol (and I'd love to) I will stay 10th oct to 14th oct.

Kevin Railsback January 30th, 2016 06:33 AM

Re: UWOL "get together" event 2016?

I picked up the week passes so I'm covered for any and all days.
The weather horrible? I'll just watch nature films all day.
Even if I miss a day and go film the countryside I figure I won't be out that much money.

I told Trond I have three main goals
Meet as many of the UWOL family as possible
See some great nature and wildlife films
Network and talk to filmmakers how I can be a better filmmaker

Trond Saetre January 30th, 2016 10:24 AM

Re: UWOL "get together" event 2016?

My initial plan is to be in Bristol from either the 9th or 10th, until the 14th.
(Of course depending that work permits, but shouldn't be much problem, I think)

Guess last week they announced the deadlines and the timetables , i may love to attend it full time as there are workshops and film screenings .
Agree we need to book flights in next few months
