I use the iRiver brand, 2 different models. 795 and 895. I am sure any mp3 with line in recording might work. Many people use Sony's Mini Disc and they are very happy with the results.

Greets Kevin,
All standard mics will give the result youre getting, but the Giant Squid iRiver mic is wired for true iRiver mono which will double your record time and only have one track. Apparently, the iRiver jack looks for the mono wire to be soldered to the opposite post than all standard mono mics. Makes no sense for them to do that.
