iRiver 512mb 795 version

I've been recording wedding videos for about a year now and I usually use a sony minidisc player as my ambient/backup recorder for audio during the ceremony and reception. I can record upto 5 hours or so on one minidisc and the sounds comes out pretty nice.

I've been reading these forums and have seen the iriver mp3 player/recorder and I am now curious as to how many people use this item and how much recording time I would get on the 512 mb version and how clear is the audio?

thanks.

Here is the record times for the 256mb version (times will double for the 512mb)

At 44.1KHz & 128 Kbps = 4 hours 26 minutes
160 = 3 hours 33 minutes
192 = 2 hours 57 minutes
224 = 2 hours 32 minutes
256 = 2 hours 13 minutes
320 = 1 hour 46 minutes

Here is a link of a mic comparison test using an iRiver:

Thanks for the sample Mark.

The Giant Squid microphone in the sample does sound superior.

Are you using the powered Giant Squid model with the battery box? I consider the small size of the iRiver recorder one of its best features, so having to add a battery box to the set-up might be a deal breaker for me in spite of the improved audio quality... At least for putting it on the groom.

I currenty use the Azden 830 mic.

I use the 795 with the Giant Squid non powered. The GS maker says that the battery powered ones are 15 decibals less signal strength, which makes no logical sense but is true. You would want to use the non battery powered ones.

Thanks to Daniel Runyon and Glenn Elliott for all the posts on the iRiver and GS mic. It's a awesome package. I just used it and it sounds awesome. It's a great alternative to a $500+ wireless microphone and we will have no chance of interference! I will still use a wireless but I will also use a couple of these combo's. I purchased a 795 from bestbuy for $129 afte 20 mail in rebate, ends tomorrow(4/23). That is just so cheap for an excellent audio source!!!

Thanks again,

Right now geeks.com has the iriver 795 for $89.99. It is refurbished however, but would probably be fine. I've bought from them before and they're fine.

Just search for 795.

I have the 795 and the Azden EX-503 mic. When I have recorded with them I only get sound in the left channel. Is this normal? I am using LINE-IN and STEREO for my settings. Thanks for any help.

Yes, if you have a mono mic it will only record on one channel. In your NLE just combine the right and left channel and you will be set.

only iriver?

I've been asked to do a wedding, and since it's not my normal 'gig' I dont want to invest a lot of money for something I may use once or twice. The Iriver option sounds appealing. I have a question.. will any mp3 recording device work? I found a 1gb recorder that sells for a really good price and is very portable. Is everyone using the Iriver 795 because of its price? Or does it have superior audio qualities?
